Am I allergic to ants?

If I'm allergic to fire ants, am I allergic to other insects?

  • Three years ago I was stung by a single Fire Ant / Imported Red Ant in the leg. Within minutes I was in full anaphylactic shock, but luckily I made it to the ER before my breathing was significantly impacted. They treated me with adrenaline and a few other things, and I was sent home with epinephrine auto-injectors but they are now expired. Living in Texas, I come in contact with fire ants on a daily basis, but I'm moving to Washington DC in a month. Since there are no fire ants in that region (to my knowledge) I'm temped to say I'm good to go and safe from this reaction, but I saw on some websites that fire ants are in the same family as bees, hornets and wasps (Hymenoptera family). I know you're probably not a doctor and even if you are, I can not assume advice on Yahoo Answers to be authoritative, but I'd like to hear your opinion regardless. If I'm allergic to fire ants, am I, or is it likely that I am also allergic to bees, hornets and/or wasps?

  • Answer:

I have an aunt who is allergic to lady bugs. And her house gets full of them during winter. Just her luck, huh?

I don't react like you, but I was stung by a tiny sugar ant and got a welt the size of the palm of my hand. If I get a bee sting, I hardly react at all, it just hurts.
