Baby and mosquito bites?

My 2 year old son is HIGHLY allergic to Mosquito bites....What can I do???....?

  • He was bit on his forehead and now his entire side of his face is swollen and his eye is swollen shut. The Dr suggested Benadryl....that doesn't seem to make a difference. He doesn't have this reaction to all Mosquito bites. A few weeks ago he was bit on the back of his knee and had the same sort of a reaction. It lasted about 2 weeks or so. Swollen HOT and red. His leg was triple the size of the other. Then as the swelling went down he bruised real bad. Again Benadryl is all the Dr suggested. I hate to give him Benadryl every day of the summer months. I am afraid to use Deet as he is only 2. Skintastic for the family doesn't seem to be cutting it. I have NEVER heard of this sort of reaction before. Are mosqito bites more dangerous than ever or does he have an odd reaction? HELP US PLEASE!!!!!! My poor baby looks so uncomforable

You need to get your son some anti-histamine medication. There are plenty on the market. Ask your pharmacist. Give it to him when he gets bitten. Not every day. I used to get dinner plate sized bites when I was a kid. Had some similar reactions as your son but not as bad. The saliva the female mosquito puts into our bodies when they bite is what causes the reaction. He will grow out of it. Just not fun watching him go through it right now. The anti-histamine medications are best, like Claratyne etc.

When I was younger I had the same reaction to mosquito bites. I am now 22 and have grown out of it - for the most part. So there is hope for your son. Have you thought about visiting an allergist? I'm not sure of the restrictions on bug repellant and young children but if you speak to your pharmacist they may be able to steer you in the right direction of a child friendly repellant. Also, you should be able to find clothing stores online that sell special clothes that repell strong sunlight AND bugs. These shirts/pant/jackets ar tightly woven but appear very thin for the hot summer. You may have to buy the smallest size and tailor it even smaller for you sun.

PREDNISONE is the miracle drug. I have had the same problem with mosquitoes ( I spent most childhood summers on crutches after being bit on the ankle or toe) and didn't find out about the steroid treatment until having it prescribed by a foreign doctor. Antihistamines will do nothing aside from knocking your son out on the couch only to wake up still swollen. Prednisone has long term side effects, but 2 or 3 10mg doses made my bites decrease drastically but I have no idea what the dose/risk is for a baby. You have to keep him away from the bugs and with a little added effort ie. closing his bedroom door when you have company, good screens, and staying indoors when the bugs are out he will be a lot more comfortable. Also cold compresses will soothe some of the pain. Guarding me from mosquitoes was my families full time job when I was a kid and still something that I am challenged by as a 25 year old. Luckily I now live in a desert climate so there are very few mosquitoes. For the record and your comfort, I did not grow up as a bug bite fearing dork, I merely had to wear a hooded sweatshirt, baseball hat and lots of bug spray while sneaking out to drink beer with my friends. Hope this helps. -Sam

Avoiding areas infested by mosquitoes (such as swamps and tall grassy areas) Removing or treating areas of standing water (empty out or treat swimming pools with chlorine) Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants if exposure to areas containing mosquitoes is planned Applying a commercially-available mosquito-repellant on exposed skin, such as those containing DEET (N, N-dimethyl-3-methyl-benzamide). DEET in concentrations of 10%-30% can safely be used on the skin of children older than 2 months of age. Treating clothing, camping tents and other fabric with permethrin (an insecticide), but do not apply directly to the skin. Also, since mosquitoes are attracted to body odor, skin temperature and carbon dioxide production, the limitation of strenuous exercise and sweating when in areas infested by mosquitoes may reduce the number of bites.

90% of the population is allergic to mosquito bites.. I am one of the few who isnt.. I dont even get a bump... plant LOTS of Marigolds.. they deter mosquitoes... Citronella also deters mosquitoes be happy if you see a dragonfly.. they EAT mosquitoes put up a BAT HOUSE - again they eat mosquitoes! look for mosquito lotion with CITRONELLA, or CATNIP you have to reapply more often, but they are better for you, yoru kid, and the environment... if you are in Canada, KOGI makes one, and ROCKY MOUNTAIN SOAP company makes the other...

I know what you mean about DEET, I wouldn't use it either, try Avon Skin So Soft they have an ingredient in there called Picaridin. It works great! and also how many Mg's. of the Benedryl are you giving your son? 25-50? for allergic reaction of someone age 12 and over they should get 50mgs. Good luck and you might want to go to the Dr. and have him allergy tested for other things too

i swell up and need anti biotics when i go on holiday what i do now is use suncream that has repelant , use a plug in for the appartment and use a creme for the evenings when i go out its a few quid and a bit of time but well worth it i only got two bites this year and they cleared up without using anti biotics prevention is best

Try Skin So Soft by Avon - it seems to work. Also, my Dad swears that if he puts a Downy dryer sheet under his cap he doesn't get bites. I don't know if it would work, but you might try. If he doesn't wear caps, try putting one inside his shirt or in his back pocket.

I have never heard of such a reaction to a mosquito bite before but how i keep them off the kids and adults here is when bathing i put skin so soft on them...and that helps to keep the bug down!i wish you luck!
