Allergies are caused by what?

What can I do to minimize allergies (hives) caused by brushing my YorkiePoo?

  • I have a 9 month old YorkiePoo puppy. I've had him since he was about 9 weeks old and just within the last few weeks I've noticed that I get itchy and break out in hives after brushing him. I'm having very minor itching throughout the day intermittently which I assume is also caused by him... I've taken Benadryll but all that does is knock me out... His coat requires daily brushing so I'm getting no relief! Bathing him doesn't seem to help, either. Before I had him, I had a pure-bred Yorkie for about 8 years and I had no allergies whatsoever to him. I love this little guy to death and getting rid of him is absolutely out of the question, but the allergies are getting to be a real hassle. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  • Answer:

you need an anti-histamine. Histamines are released in your body when a foriegn body is seen as a threat (in this case, hair or other particles from your puppy). Histamines are what make you itchy. An anti-histamine med would help prevent that. They are sold over the counter. Try allegra or zyrtec or claritin and take it regularly, everyday, to allow it to get into your system. Also, try hard to be concious not to touch your eyes, mouth, and nose after touching/brushing your puppy. Good luck!
