Cat allergies. What can I do to prevent an allergic reaction?

  • I am going to my best friend's house today for a sleepover, which we have planned for many weeks now. Problem is, we live in a house with three indoor cats, and my my friend is allergic. I can only imagine how irritating it is, and I don't want to cause too much trouble for her, especially since I'll be there for three days instead of the usual hour or so. My question is, what causes the allergic reaction, and what can I do to get rid of the offensive material (i.e. fur, dander, whatever causes the problem)? I don't think lint rollers do the trick, and I want my friend to be as happy and healthy as possible on this and future visits.

    I would like to commend you for being very thoughtful of your friends allergies. I wish everyone were that considerate. I, like your friend, am very allergic to cats. You say you are going for a sleepover that will last 3 days. First of all, do not bring bedding from your house to your friends house. Your pillow, sleeping bag, sheets, blankets, etc are covered with dander that you can not eliminate. Ask your friend if she has an extra pillow and bedding that you can use while at her house. (I'm sure she does.) As far as your clothing goes, just make sure it is freshly washed and that it has not been exposed to your cats. Keep in mind that your winter jacket also has dander on it, as well as your shoes, socks, etc. Offer to hang your jacket up in her garage instead of in the coat closet so that the dander does not get onto her jacket(s). Shoes can be kept outside too... While Benadryl works for short term relief, it is not a "cure" to her allergies. Allergy medication, even something over the counter like Claratin, Claratin-D, or Alavert (or generic equivilents) will provide your friend with more sustained relief of her symptoms. You should ask her if she takes allergy meds on a daily basis. Have fun this weekend!! It sounds like you'll have a great time with your friend

It is the dander that causes the problem for most people with animal related allergies. It is very sweet that you are so concerned about your friend, but I don't think it will be as bad as you think as long as you don't go covered in cat fur. I have two indoor cats and I share my office at work with someone who is allergic to cats. She has never had a reaction from her proximity to me. Make sure to wash the clothes you plan to take right before you pack them and keep them someplace where they will be least exposed to any dander. If your friend does have a reaction then get her some benedryl and wash your clothes again (including the ones you are wearing) once you get to her house. Good luck and have a great time.

Hi, I am also allergic to cats. Not very fun! I can't even go in a house around them. What does help alot is benedril. If you are going somewhere you know has a cat, take benedril as directed on bottle or packet. When you go the cat will not bother you as much. Try to keep away from the cat. If there are others there maybe they can guide the cat away from you. Make sure the people you are visiting also run the sweeper and clean, ect. It halps alot to have a clean house if you keep animals. Not cleaning up daily can cause an attack from the cat for you.

Take a shower when you get to her house, strip off your clothes and put on a clean set. Before you go though, maybe use a lint roller to get some of the dander off of you.

Sadly, the only way to get rid of your symptoms is to stay away from cats. You can get allergy shots, but they don't always work. Your friend needs to vaccuum and dust a lot before you show up.

Meds for your friend, and wash your things right before you pack so the cat fur and dander doesn't have a chance to get into it. Good luck!

You should get an allergy test and talk to your doctor that is the best way because then you might be able to get medicine
