Tounge and Throat Swelling. Allergic Reaction? Seek Help?
-
I read about this online and think it might be an allergic reaction. I had a cold recently but I am almost completely over it. However in the meantime I began taking Delsym cough suppressant, which I had never taken before, to stop my coughing, but I have not taken it since yesterday night. I also began using Chloraseptic tounge strips (active ingredient Benzocaine) a few days ago too. This morning I woke up and my tounge felt a tiny bit weird but I ignored it. I came back home in the evening and took 2 more strips to help sooth my throat and a few hours later my tounge is bothering me more and I can feel my uvula touching it. My breathing might be a little bit hindered but I can breathe fine, I feel fine, no rash or anything like that. It's been about 2 hours since it began bothering me, but it hasn't gotten better or worse. I am also taking seroquel, but I have been taking that for months with no problems. Should I call for some sort of help? Or can I sleep it off?

Answer:
This doesn't sound like a typical allergic reaction. As a general rule, an allergic reaction that caused swelling of the throat and tongue would not just stop at that point, and your breathing would be affected as well. And if your uvula were truly touching your tongue, I'd expect you not to be breathing much at all. I believe you may have some swelling and irritation from the tongue strips, but not the Delsym. I assume that you were using the chloraseptic strips because you had a sore throat already, and it may be you have strep throat or tonsillitis. The benzocaine in the strips would have numbed the worst of that pain quite possibly. At this point, you would do better to see a doctor and have things checked out. Neither strep throat nor tonsillitis are an emergency, but they should still be attended to.

Right after dinner tonight, squeeze 10 pieces of citrus fruits. Simply remove the seeds and drink the pure juice. You need to do this for 3-5 days. Be sure you will drink the juice after dinner only. DON'T EVER DRINK THE JUICE WITH EMPTY STOMACH. Always drink more boiled water so as to help in the healing process. NEVER EAT CHOCOLATE OR ANY SWEETS. GOD BLESS THE CHILD.

I would try taking an antihistamine (like Benadryl) and if it helps, it was probably an allergic reaction. The throat swelling is generally a symptom of an anaphalytic reaction, which usually come on pretty quickly. Because it has been over a period of time, I wouldn't worry that it is too serious. Just to be safe, you should probably stop taking the delsym and the chloraseptic for a while. This could also just be your cold manifesting itself as a more severe sore throat, though. If it last a while longer and the benadryl doesn't help, you should probably go to the doctor.
