Ongoing bad hives, swollen lip/eyes/face...?
-
sorry for posting loads of questions about this, but feel i get more help here than at the doctors!.....ive had a case of very bad hives for 7 weeks, im now on between 180mg - 260mg a day of antihistamnine, although their effect seems to be wearing off... the last 4 days, ive purposely included chocolate, crisps, ice cream, bread..digestive biscuits, basically alot of rubbish, and the last 3 days the hives were worse along with waking up with swollen eyes, face and today its my top lip.....(i have had this (swelling) problem before in the last 7 weeks just not in quick succession like this)......so now im going on a small sensible fast to see if it clears up.... did anyone find hives worse when they ate rubbish?..im 25 and never had an allergy before, and i simply woke up one day with hives, and they havent gone since :(

I am a long time food allergy sufferer, so I totally empathize with everything you are going through. I am sorry you are feeling so miserable-believe me it does get better! I think you have some of your answers in your question. Obviously you are allergic to either the chocolate, ice cream ingredients or the bread. The elimination diet that you are considering is the best way however you should not be this miserable during the process either. I think if your face is that swollen and you have a bunch of hives you need to get something to supplement the antihistimine right now. Go back to the doctor and ask him/her for a short course corticosteroid treatment like: Prednisolone, prednisone or medrol. The simple reason for this is that you need to get your allergic reactions under control before they really start wreaking internal havoc in your body. If your IgE (histimine releasing cells) are elevated (and I am assuming that after 7 weeks this is the case) you will not be able to get any relief unless you bring it closer to normal through the use of the short burst steroids. A simple blood test should tell your doctor how high your IgE is. If your doctor is not on the same page with this you need to get to an allergist or GP who can treat you with the care you deserve. Good luck!

Try cutting out some of the major food allergens. Eggs, milk, and wheat are some of the worst along with things like peanuts. Keep a food journal for a week and limit your diet for a while until the hives go away. Then, add back foods (or food groups) to see if it causes hives. I was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance (not an allergy) at 23 and am "growing into allergies" mostly to plants. If you visit Celiac.com, you can find some great information about how to isolate food allergens, even if you don't have ceilac disease. Otherwise, you could search google for "elimination diet" to get instructions for how to do it. You might also want to look at your soaps, lotions, and makeups. Anything that comes in contact with your face... but it really sounds more like a food allergy. Hope this helps!

It could be chocolate, nuts or other things. When you test food you have to do one at a time so that you can find out which one is doing this to you. I am surprised that the doctors have not put you on steroids to get rid of them and do the allery testing also.

go to an allergist - they can test you for all allergies they do this by scraping little pins along your back with different allergens on it - it does not hurt and it will let you know exactly what you are allergic to - if your meds from doc have not worked than insurance should cover the trip to the allergist

I was recently diagnosed with chronic autoimmune urticaria. It basically means I have hives and it is an autoimmune disease. I have had it for 10 years. Your problem could very well be an allergy, but if it not resolved through elimination and seeing an allergist, you should be tested for the autoimmune disease. It is a simple blood test. Knowing that it is the autoimmune disease does not solve the problem, but at least you know the cause. When hives last as long as yours have, it is considered chronic. You need to be on a combination of antihistamines. When mine flare up really bad I take Zyrtec, Doxepin, Atarax, and Allegra. Zyrtec and Atarx are my favorite. Speak to your doctor. Good luck!

Have you had allergy testing? My husband suffered from hives for a loooong time before we got him tested. It turns out that he had a SEVERE dust allergy. Have you moved recently? Anything used moved into the house, are you using a new pillow? Change laundry soaps? Try checking out contact allergies too besides food. When adding things to your diet,,,do them one at a time,,,for a week or so and then add another problem food. If you eat too many in succession, you won't be able to tell what is bothering you. Good Luck!!!
