Why do my lips sting when I eat pineapple?

  • Today, I ate some fresh, raw pineapple for the first time. I've eaten canned pineapple but never straight from the fruit itself. I cut it up and bit into it, and it was very juicy, and I ended up getting juice all down my arms and on my elbows, and on my lips too. (I know, messy! Dx) Later, I noticed the corners of my lips stung pretty badly. They do now, in fact, and it kind of hurts to open my mouth or stretch it. My elbows and arms also got pretty itchy after the juice got on them. This hasn't happened with canned pineapple before... so am I allergic, or what? o.o

    You may be allergic, but it could also be dry lips, the acid in fruits like that can irritate dry lips, if you eat something and it happens again, then rinse your lips and use chapstick or carmex as much as possible, if the stinging persists see a doctor

the juice of pineapple is acidic. that means the juice is very acid-y and it can cause irritation in the lips, the gums, and the tongue. it's normal to be irritated by the acid when eating pineapples.

Well it sound's like your allergic, the reason you don't have a problem with the caned one is because it's cooked, well sort of, it's heated up to kill germs, and it also kills some of the protein, But your best bet is to stay away from fresh pineapple, and you should also get a skin test to see what your allergic to because allot of fruit people eat are from the same family, Good luck.
