I'm not sick, but I always have a stuffy nose! What can I do to help?
-
I've had allergies for years, so I'm assuming it is related to that. All year long, even when I am not sick, I have a stuffy nose. My mom always asks me if I am sick because I sound nasally. I have trouble breathing at night because I sleep with my mouth closed and there seems to be limited air passing through my nose. What can I do to help this? I've tried a neti-pot, but the water won't even come out the other side! Are there any OTC drugs I can use? Would an allergy medicine, such as Claritin, relieve my stuffy nose? I heard nasal sprays work well, but they can be dangerous. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Answer:
I have the same problem and it gets worse at night when I'm laying down. I don't know the cause, but I am pretty well educated in Medical Knowledge and I'm venturing to guess it's a very, very minor allergy to something. I have found the following helps: Vicks Inhaler. The small one that is about the size of a chap-stick and at night I use a cool mist humidifier. I DO NOT RECOMMEND taking allergy meds on a daily basis. Any medication is hard on your liver, so the less you take regularly the better.

I really feel for you! I have suffered from allergies for 15 plus years along with Migraines. I also had a hard time at night with my breathing. I started taking OPC-3 (Oligomeric proanthocyanidins) now for about a year and have had neither. I have passed this information along to quite a few of my friends, and they are all loving the results! Hope this Helps...Good luck!
If you can go to the Dr. and they will prescribe some of the new nasal sprays that have a steroid in them that really works very well. Like Flonase , if you can't do that I would suggest using a little OTC nasal spray before bed, and try some of the Breath Right nasal strips on your nose, they may help open your airway. Also a dose of Benedryl at bedtime may help also, You can do all these together, and maybe get a better night sleep. Good Luck

I have had the EXACT same experience. I'm stuffy all year long, have frequent sinus headaches, and have tried every prescription and over the counter medication for allergies (including sinus rinsing). I've also tried nasonex, flonase and ovaris. None of them work for me. (But they may work for you.) I had a cat scan on my sinuses and was told that they are normal. The doctor said the only remedy was to have allergy shots for five years. They also said to dust your house frequently and have the air ducts cleaned. But mostly I just live with it. To sleep I use the kirland nasal spray from Costco. It clears me up enough that I can breathe through my nose.
