What triggers a headache?

Food triggers - migraine?

  • Hey, I get migraines, I always used to get them from stress and dark chocolate, the aura kind, sometimes with headache, sometimes without, mostly light disturbances and sick / dizzyness. Recently, ive also been getting a hot / fat/swollen feeling in my right arm / hand (similar to pins and needles) when I get a migraine, and they have been almost constant. My mum was about this age when she developed her migraine alergy to cheese, so she has said I should cut everything out I could be allergic to for acouple of days until I feel better then reintroduce things... Any advice on what I can eat that isnt wheat / dairy / other migraine triggers, and also my new migraine symptom and anything else you wish to comment on? Lou x

  • Answer:

Migraines also are a sign that you or someone close to you is pushing you very hard. Migraines are also a sign of stress created through not being able/willing to express yourself the way you would like. Observing your diet is a good method, but is usually secondary - seek to understand the idea that is creating the migraines and work on that. Then any adjustments you make to your diet will be more effective.

Stay away from CHEDDAR cheeses, RED wine, fried foods, super salty foods, large amounts of ANY chocolate, and STRESS - - - stress is the number one trigger for migraines, followed in many women by your monthly cycle, THEN food. I found mild exercise like walking, and cutting way back on the above mentioned foods, to be a MAJOR improvement in avoiding the nasty migraines - I feel for you - they are horrid. My migraines completely disappeared after I went through menopause - thank God!

Stay away from all refined sugar. If you absolutely must have something sweet, organic maple syrup.
