Swollen face? advice please?
-
can anyone advise please? my son(aged 21 )rang me yesterday to say his face was very swollen, i went to see him and was very shocked! the whole right side of his face was literally like a swollen balloon.i advised him to go up to the hospitals walk in centre which he did, and they have advised him they think he may have had an allergic reaction to something. he has ben given antihistamines but these are not helping. today i have seen him and the other side of his face is swollen and also his nostrils. he looks like hes been in a punch up! he says hes not in any pain anywhere but that he feels very tired and lethargic. again the doctor is just saying they think its an allergic reaction to something (what we don't know as we've thought and thought and hes eaten nothing different from normal nor has he changed any toiletries etc) can anyone shed any light on what this could be as im reallyworried. his face is double the size of usual. all answers appreciated. p.s thought it might be a bite of some kind but can see nothing also its definitely not his teeth as we've checked with the dentist.

Answer:
Remember, allergies can be anything you injest... eat, drink, breath, things that you touch or that touch you...so it could be air freshener, carpeting, adhesive used in flooring etc. It can also be caused by a cumulitive effect so stuff peviously 0K may now be a trigger or items from simlar 'families' such as onion type veg. It may be that someone he comes, or has come, into contact with was wearing cosmetics or fabrics, or had handled something that was the trigger. Minute traces of a trigger are still a trigger. Reactions can be dramatic but only some are dangerous..Giant Urticura may have a dot in the centre, a large circular purple patch with a v dark/black ringed edge, resembling a target. A limb may swell..trouble if wearing a bangle or ring. Anaphalactic shock involves a lowering of the blood pressure to the point of collapse and a swelling of the tongue or throat blocking the air way and requires IMMEDIATE medical attention. There are a number of prescription antihistamines which suppoesedly are equal in strength but some suit some people/situations better, some are not as sedative. Sometimes where there there is no obvious trigger and the problem resolves, it is attributed to 'stress'! As I mentioned in another post, there are occasional local clusters of people with similar reactions that arent considerd life threating or significant enough to warrant lenghty investigation. I undestand that you are worried but if this has persited for a couple of days perhaps request the GP review the situation and at least try a different drug. Remember things like new pillows etc could be suspect. As I have a latex problem even someone walking across a carpet in new trainers leaves an invisible trigger, and I was actually allergic to my first antihistamine too!

you have to find out what he reacted to by the process of elimination, this is a bad reaction, the next time he could be anaphlactic which is the most serious reaction and requires a jab of the hormone adrenalin to open his airways so he can breathe, hopefully it won't come to that but you have to thoroughly investigate what caused it

Go back to A&E and tell them you want something done, it does sound like an allergy, your body can change overnight when it comes to allergies, it does take a few days for the antihistamines to work but it could be something worse, get him checked out - my daughter was 20 years old when she developed an egg allergy,

Take him to an ER now. "They think" is not an appropriate answer. THey must find out for sure what it is and what the cause otherwise it will continue to get worse. If it is an allergy, what is he allergic to? if these don't get answered it will happen again.

My dog gets swollen a lot on her face. Advice please. My dog gets swollen a lot on her face. Just this past week under her mouth around her neck was swollen, and it’s sometimes her check, her eye, or lip. We have taken her to the vet and they say it’s an allergic reaction and that we should give her Bendadryl. Which seems to work, but she swells at least twice a month…sometimes more, could this be something else? We have sprayed the house for insects and out, so if she is allergic to something I don’t know what it is? Let me know what you think. Thanks! Renee
