What caused my allergies?
-
I think I have hives because my skin is itchy and tingly in random areas of my body. So I'm trying to find out what caused it... abalone: I ate abalone for the first time a couple of days ago, but I found out that if you are allergic to it, you're allergic to oysters. But I've been eating oysters several times in my life and there hasn't been a problem. cloves: I sprinkled my dinner with cloves a couple nights ago, and that was the first time I tried it too. But I found out also that you'd be allergic to cinnamon, which I've eaten many times as well. I'm still thinking of other things which might have cause my allergies. Help please?

Answer:
People are sometimes allergic to things later on that they weren't allergic to 5 years ago. All I can tell you is there are many things....soaps, orange juice, shellfish, animals, etc.,.. the list is endless.

I get hives as an allergic reaction to salicylates. Salicylates are found in everything to one level or another. If you do a search for a salicylate food list, you'll find a list, with 4-6 columns titled from negligible salicylate content to very high salicylate content. It might be worth looking at one of those lists and seeing if the foods that give you the reaction are up on the higher end of the list. It is possible to have allergic reactions only to certain things. Abalone and oysters are two different kinds of food, as are cloves and cinnamon. No matter how similar they are, there are still slight differences in them, which could mean you are allergic to abalone and not oysters and to cloves but not cinnamon. If you can't work it out, seeing your gp and/or getting referred to a specialist in allergies can be very useful. They have studied the human body, including allergic responses, and may be able to test to find out exactly what it is you are allergic to.
