Is it possible to be allergic to silicon earrings?

Why am I allergic to earrings?

  • I wore earrings since I was 5 until about a couple years ago when I started to develop an allergic reaction. Most of the time my ears start to itch a lot and turn red or blue where the jewelry touches my lobes. I've tried clear nail polish to cover them. Some jewelry is worse than others but every type I've tried to something. I've even tried real earrings and sterling silver. I am not allergic to jewelry anywhere else on my body besides rings very rarely. I have my belly pierced and everything. Also, I had small gages for awhile because I couldn't stand not having anything in my ears and I was not allergic to them. Is there anything I can do as far as wearing earrings?

It is probably the nickel in the earring. Maybe if you wear 14karrot gold it will be ok.

I've had a similar experience except that I can wear sterling silver as well as gold and the nickel free "sensitive" type earrings. One thing that helped me is to change your earrings on a daily basis and if your piercings get irritated use neosporin or tea tree oil on them... that always has cleared up those issues for me. The other thing to watch for is that even though some earrings might be silver, gold, or nickel-free, sometimes that "layer" of one of these things wears down to a cheaper metal below that causes a reaction. If any of your earrings have done this you might want to throw them out.

I have the same issue. I would try real gold instead of nickel. It works for me. Good luck!
