What can I do about a constant nose bleed caused by allergies?
-
My nose just won't stop bleeding, and it's because of my allergies, but the blood isn't really coming from inside of my nose...more like way down in my sinus cavity. It doesn't drain out, it just pools there, causes pressure, and blocks my breathing, and then when I sneeze it will either all come out at once in a big mess, or dry and I have to try to scrub it out with tissue. I've been taking allergy medication but it just isn't working. Any tips? Thanks!

Answer:
Is it actual nosebleeds, or dryness of the blood vessels caused by the allergies - which cause the vessels to dry out and crack? I have a similar problem in that I have periodic bleeding from the nose and have learned to use some ointments of creams to keep the vessels moist and soft. Also, check out some of the tips for draining your nasal cavity - - like spraying with a mild salt solution - - but I understand that the best way to do so is to lay with your head hanging off the bed and give a quick spray, but do it quick and lightly. I always feel like I am drowning, but it does help. Simple solution that does not cost anything except for a small inexpensive spray bottle or two, so that you alternate using so you keep one steriled at all times, and available. Another tip - - check out WebMD.com, Dr. Oz. com for some possible solutions. Wish you the best of luck. I know how you feel because I have been there, and get there often, especially in the winter months. Real cold air is also one of the causes of the drying out, so learn to wear a scarf across your nose to warm the air entering the nostrils.

It is cold in most parts of the country now and keeping your bedroom air moist is imperative for allergy and cold sufferers. Get a humidifier and use it. Often the nose bleeding is from dry nasal passages that have cracked and allow bleeding and by the same token allow cold virus to enter the system. Before going to bed tonight, put a kettle of water on to heat. When it is steaming, put it on the table and sit, holding your head over it and breath in the steam. Putting a towel over your head helps concentrate the steam. It will feel wonderful to your dry nasal passages and the heat and steam just plain feel good. If you are using nasal spray for your allergies, that can also cause nose bleeding. I was prescribed some kind of spray for allergies and after using it for about a week, I had nose bleeds. I was told it was one of the side effects of the medication in the spray. I no longer use it.
