Can you get an allergy to something you were never allergic to before?
-
I was just wondering if you could develop an allergy out of the blue. Has anyone? What are you now allergic to that you weren't before?

Answer:
I have seen health care workers become allergic to latex after years of working with latex gloves in the hospital.

Yes, allergies can come and go. I wasn't allergic to penecillin until I was 13 and in my 20's developed an allergy to sulpha based drugs. And a cousin of mine used to be severely allergic to cats as a kid and he's not anymore.

Yes, and they can leave just as quickly. I was never allergic to dogs, then suddenly developed an allergy. Then it suddenly went away and was replaced by an allergy to grass. Who knows?

Allergies are usually acquired after very small, sometimes repeated exposures to the substance causing the allergic response. Someone who is allergic to cats, for example, probably did not have an allergic response the first time they encountered a cat. It developed over time. Similarly, the allergy may go away or reduce in magnitude over time. This is exactly what happened to me. With cats. Some allergies are more worrisome though - many people with allergies to shellfish or peanuts or other foods have an allergic response so severe it can be life-threatening. If you are referring to a severe condition like this, it really should be addressed by an allergist or other medical practitioner.

Hi Yes! I did... I have never in my life ( I'm 19) been allergic to nuts, tree or peanut. All of a sudden I was going to the E.R. because I couldn't breathe right! I now carry an Epi Pen just in case! I couldn't believe that the allergy just hit like that!
I never used to be allergic to anything....no foods or environment...now I am allergic to almost everything.....started out only being allergic to some things about 16 years ago, now I am allergic to everything (foods, environment, animals, perfumes) If I get allergic to anything else I think I will just die....or have to live in a bubble...but I'd probably be allergic to the plastic....so....I'd just die....

its based on your immune system. sometimes it reacts different when it weakens alil. you might be vulnerable to certain things you weren't before. its like a computer with an old virus protector. as soon as you remove it to place a new one. you leave your computer open for viruses until you quarantine it with a new protector.
