What would be causing Hives?

Hives on My Scalp, what is causing them and how to stop them?

  • For the last week I have a had a very itchy scalp, I didn't know what it was until yesterday and it looks like hives. I am in my early 20's male with short hair, and I shower once to twice a day. The hives appear only on the scalp and sometimes spreads to forehead. I just got Benadryl today and hopefully that will help. Any idea why I am getting hives only on my scalp and not else where? I've never had this happen before. And what I can do to get rid of this problem? Thanks (Also I don't have lice, or dandruff)

  • Answer:

A couple of things to check: 1) your hair-care products: it could be a soap, gel or shampoo that's making this happen. Try cutting these things out of your hygiene regimen and see which one it might be. 2) be careful with sun exposure, some people get hives in the sun 3) also be careful with extremes of temperature (hot or cold) from showers or sun exposure, these can trigger allergic hives as well. I'd recommend seeing an allergist if you can get to one; they may help you narrow down the cause. Also, from personal experience I'd say try Zyrtec, it's a non-prescription med that's available at most drugstores and can specifically help with hives. I get a recurring giant hive on my face that's controlled by taking Zyrtec daily.
