What could cause a chronic rash?

What to do when nicotine patches will cause you a rash?

  • I have tried to quit smoking many times and found that the patches work best... I tried the gum and it was not effective @ all. The only problem with the patch is that I get a rash @ the site of the application. Any ideas on tips to reduce the rash, so i can finally stop smoking?

  • Answer:

The patch was the only thing that worked for me also. There's not really much you can do about the rash at the application site unfortunately. When I was using Nicoderm, the spot where I put the patch would itch like hell while it was on so I just kind of rubbed my fingers over the top of it continuously. It got so bad one time that I just pulled the damn thing up and gave it a good scratch. I sympathize with you man. I really do. Just hang in there and remember what the end result will be. Remember how horrible cigarettes will taste after you go through the whole system. That was the only thing that kept me going. Good luck!!

Scratch it. No seriously, it always happens, its worth it though for that euphoric rush of nicotine that comes mere minutes later.

You might be allergic to the patch....or at least the adhesive. See your doc about this and maybe he could try you on a different patch. There are other alternatives. There is a nasal inhaler as well as a new medication called Chantix which you gradually increase in order to decrease cravings. Good luck.

The patches use to make my skin red and itch also. I recommend going to your doctor and getting a script for Chantix. If your not familiar with it, it is a medication unlike any other. It blocks the receptors from binding to the nicotine. In return your cravings are diminished. It's $100.00 if your insurance doesn't cover it / month for three months. You start taking the medicine while you continue to smoke. On day seven of taking the pills you stop smoking all together. You still have some cravings but they are small and if you do something to take your mind off of it, you'll never notice them. I only took four weeks worth of pills and haven't smoked since February. They are expensive but I would still be smoking without it. A group of us decided to do this together and only one kept smoking, but she never really wanted it to work. Give up on the patches and move forward..
