Do I Have A Nut Allergy?

I have a nut allergy and am worried about using Shampoos & Conditioners? They make me very ill?

  • I think that everytime i use certain shampoos and conditioners an 'anaphylactoid reaction' where my throat swells up and my skin itchees, plus i find it difficult to breathe. Its not steam or asthma. Most people with nut allergy react after contact with small amounts (less than one nut) and some people may react to trace amounts. I know you don't always have to eat nuts to have a reaction. So can ground nut or tree nut derivatives in my shampoos and conditioner start a reaction? I have found most products contain: earth nut, peanut oil, arachis oil, and ground nut oil, Palmolive has Almond oil in it Macadamia nut oil in Dove or Aussie Moist shampoo Rainforest Shampoos & Conditioners have Ngali Nut oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Shea Butter which nourish hair and scalp, some have Avocado Oil, Brazil Nut oil

  • Answer:

I have a nut allergy and many other allergies... I just tend to use one shampoo/conditioner. Just a note, many shampoos use cocnut oil and others you listed.... go see your doctor. (s)he may be able to prescribe you some shampoo or give you advice on which one to buy... -get the cheap stuff, it's usually just basic oils and chemicals...also...baby shampoo is good aswell.

Baby shampoo and forget the conditioner! This works for me. If my hair gets into a bad condition I leave a beaten raw yolk of egg on my hair for twenty minutes...rinse it off in WARM water shampoo then rinse again in water with a small amount of vinegar added to give it shine and squeaky clean hair.

I think you just answered your own question. But to do it again for you: yes.

First of all Avocado is not a nut. It is a fruit and therefore probably it may not be harmful to you. But you could try a very small amount first. Secondly you may not be allergic to all kind of nuts. You just have to find out but if even a trace affects you that can be a problem. Preferably use products that do not have nut oils or dervatives.

Some people with nut allergy's can have a reaction just from standing next to someone who's eaten nuts, it can really be that severe. I suggest using a natural soap like Dr Bonner's - I'm sure there are nut free versions or try an olive oil soap. You can use it to wash your hair as well as your body and even your clothes.

That's impressive the knowledge you have about the shampoos. Yes, even in the air or skin contact can cause a bad reaction. Hopefully there are some safe shampoos out there for those allergic to nuts.

Yes they can. Fructis shampoo & conditioner is known to cause allergic reactions in some people. It was one of the first things I was taught when training to be a hairdresser.

it's best to ask your healthcare provider these questions. he or she may be able to recommend products to you.

Stop using these products. Get some benadryl and call your doctor.
