Eczema or something else? Please help! ?

Hello all, my son is 15 months old and about 6 months ago, I noticed his cheeks were starting to get rosy, so I took him to the dr. and she said it was eczema, she prescribed Cetaphil for wash, and Aquafor ointment for his cheeks. NOW... he has a "rash" on the backs of his knees and little "round patches" that look like dry red skin all over his legs and tops of his feet. I took him back to dr. and she said it was dermititis AND eczema??? So, she prescribed Hydrocortisone 1% for 7 days and it all went away. It went away for about 2 weeks and now it is BACK! He is not itching it, but it looks horrible. So, she again gave me Hydrocortisone for it, it has been almost a week and it's about gone. She also said that right after his bath to slather the Aquafor on him before he is completey dryed off to keep his skin moistened. I don't know what to do, we are not using new laundry soap, etc. I know it will come back. ANY ADVICE or other ointments that would work better? And do you think this is eczema? I know if I keep using the hydrocortisone it is making his skin thin.

Answer:
The doctor is advising the right thing. Continue using Cetaphil as it will not irritate the skin as much, the next thing to do is to keep the skin moisturized. Cetaphil has a range of moisturizers. Furthermore, an oatmeal bath will be good to reduce the redness and itchiness. Hydrocortisone is the best for eczema however it is only to be used for 7 days and then a few days off then start again. What I usually tell the customers is to apply for 5 days and take the weekend off. Then continue until the rashes have gone down.

well in my experiences whenever i got eczema, it was always backs of elbows, and backs of knees but yea, i just used an oatmeal bath everyday, and didn't itch it and it cleared up.

People can develop allergies out of no where...try changing his soap (aveeno oatmeal wash) and his laundry soap.

Yep...sounds just like what I have, eczema. The hydrocortizone is effective but there are numerous treatments that have no serious side effects (skin thinning), Get a consult with a dermatologist. There could be other contributing factors as well; milk allergy, etc. Also he is more likely to have asthma and allergies.

All my kids have eczema. We found that our doctor kept prescribing stronger and stronger hydrocortisone creams without looking into any other treatments. We went to a homeopath and got told to use primadophilus powder (from a health food shop) into their formula or cereal each day. You can get this in a children's strength and you must keep it in the fridge. We also put a few teaspoons of flaxseed oil in their yoghurt, or over salad for the older ones. This dramatically improved their skin. Use the hydrocortisone to get the eczema under control, and definitely stick with the aqafor cream too. We use it instead of soap in the bath, as well as slathering it on afterwards. Have you tried a sensitive skin laundry detergent? It does sound like he has eczema, and the bad news is it will flare up at any time with no rhyme or reason to it, but these tips help us. Also get him checked for food allergies, these often cause eczema.
