How to treat a spider bite?

  • Last night, I felt a pricking sensation on my chest. A few min later, I felt another on my stomach. I woke up this morning very itchy with a big red circle on my stomach and a slight rash in that same area. I went to the walk-in clinic and the Dr said it was probably a spider bite. She recommended steroids but I told her no way. I don't take medicines really unless I absolutely have to. She then recommended Claritin or Benadryl & some cream. I'm putting the cream on it and it HAS gotten better so does anyone think I HAVE to take the meds or can I wait it out? I think if the Dr was really concerned this was a serious spider bite, she would've told me. She didn't look too concerned (or interested) at all. Thoughts? I live in CT and this happened in a building, I never go outside. I don't think the spider was too dangerous...

    If your symptoms are getting better, then you can probably continue on your current course with the Benadryl and cream. I advise you to stay on the Benadryl until the rash is gone for a full 24 hours...to prevent a rebound. BUT...you should see the doctor right away if any of the following happens: 1. You develop any trouble breathing...even if it's just a tight feeling in your throat and a little cough. This accompanied by muscle pain and cramping. Spiders can have a type of poison called neurotoxins which affect your nervous system. 2. The bite areas become very red, swollen, warm to the touch with pus drainage. These are symptoms of infection. 3. You start running a fever over 100. 4. If the skin around the bites starts to look like it's being eaten (eroded) away. Many spiders have a type of poison called hemotoxins that can cause your skin to ulcerate. 5. If the bite sites aren't healing within a week or so...or if they get worse.

spiders have a very bad and painless toxin. It acts slowly and it does not stop until all of the toxin is used up. You may regret not using all of the meds and not taking the steroids. The doctor's outward apathy may not be apathy at all but rather a wish not to panic you. If you do not do all you can medically, you may end up with a hole in your skin that is really deep into the muscle layers of the stomach and big enough to put an orange into. Do NOT play with spider bites. They can easily be fatal, especially if they become infected and complicate matters much farther.

If I were you, I'd've taken the steroids, no telling, they could have worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give specific anti-serum. Other insect bites can usually be successfully managed with home remedies and drugstore products.

Yea it does matter what spider bit you but only two of them that I can think of can cause serious problems and the Dr would've told you that you were bitten by them. Since the Dr. Didn't you can also use meat tenderizer on the bites. The ingredients in it neutralize the poison in almost all spider bites except brown recluse and black widow bites but they are the very potent and are the ones that leave distinctive bites.
