Am I lactose intolerant?

Lactose intolerant problems advice?

  • im 19 and i am lactose intolerant. MANY people in my family older and younger are lactose intolerant. and by that i mean several farts after eating ice cream. i noticed my lactose intolerance getting worse about 1 1/2 years. i was farting a lot worse after eating dairy. there was one night i had cheese and crackers and i threw up violently for a few minutes later that night. there was also one time i had 4 big pieces of pizza with extra cheese, i threw up all night long then. not sure if it was the cheese, eating too much, or a bug. i often get headaches or stomach aches after i eat even just a little bit of cheese. and it seems like its been getting gradually worse for the last 2 years or so. its something i can live with easily but i dont like the stinky farts in public or having to hold them in and have a massive stomach ache. and i love dairy food so i definetly do not want to stop eating it and i do not want to eat less of it either. what are some remedies? right now, i dont have a lot of money but even if something costs alot of money tell me about it. also is there a measurement or something like that that tells u how intolerant or how allergic you are? i heard of a blood test for lactose intolerant but what does the test even measure?

Alot of things have lactose in them that you probably didn't realise would have it. Eg salami, pepperoni, stir through pasta sauces, pesto, popcorn ( most of the time it is the cheap brand that don't have lactose), soups, confectionary, chocolate (unless it's made with carob). If you have a scratch test it can tell you whether you are allergic to cows milk or lactose intolerant. You can get a blood test through a GP. For me, i've had both and they didn't cost me anything but it could be different in USA. You can buy substitutes for margarine/butter, I buy Nuttalex (around the same price as other brands of butter/ margarine). It does taste different, but I don't eat as much margarine (on toast, sandwiches) anymore anyway. I have become more creative with spreads and my taste has adjusted. Milk, I drink lactose free milk now, which you can buy from the supermarket again for around the same price as other brands of milk. You can also buy lactose free cream which doesn't taste too bad. My problem has been yoghurt. I have things with cheese occasionally but I make sure that I don't have anything else with lactose during the day. Sorbet or gelato is a good substitute for ice cream. I have both sebhorreic and eczema and lactose makes my skin more dry and especially my scalp. I also get severe pain after eating chocolate or ice cream cake. Too much cheese & I end up living in the toilet for the rest of the day. You can try Buscopan (it helps with abdo problems like Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but you usually need a prescription.

For those who react to very small amounts of lactose or have trouble limiting their intake of foods that contain it, the lactase enzyme is available without a prescription to help people digest foods that contain lactose. These tablets are taken with the first bite of dairy-containing food. The lactase enzyme is also available as a liquid. Adding a few drops of the enzyme makes lactose more digestible for people with lactose intolerance. Even though lactose intolerance is common, it is not a threat to good health. People who have trouble digesting lactose can learn which dairy products and other foods they can eat without discomfort and which ones they should avoid. Many people can enjoy milk, ice cream, and other such products if they eat them in small amounts or eat other food at the same time. Others can use lactase liquid or tablets to help them digest the lactose. Even older women at risk for osteoporosis, and growing children who must avoid milk and foods made with milk, can meet most of their dietary needs by eating greens, fish, and other calcium-rich foods that are free of lactose.
