Why are we allergic to cats?

Why am a allergic to my rat but not cats or dogs?

  • With my rat if I even just touch him I get itchy red bumps and my eyes and nose start to itch and sometimes my eyes will swell up. It's only my rat that makes me do this, I'm not allergic at all to cats or dogs or even any other rodent. Why just rats?

  • Answer:

Pet allergens are proteins, which when in contact with the skin or breathed in, cause an allergic reaction that provokes the body into producing histamine. Rat proteins are different from cats, dogs etc. Most sites give advice for dealing with dog and cat allergies, but the advice is no different for a rat allergy.

Allergies to pets with fur or feathers are common, especially among people who have other allergies or asthma. From 15 percent to 30 percent of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs. A rodent allergy is an adverse reaction by the body's immune system to rodents such as mice and rats. The allergy is usually associated with the skin, saliva or urine of rodents. The body's immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE - an antibody) and histamine in response to contact with the allergen. The specific symptoms that can result can vary considerably amongst patients e.g. skin and respiratory symptoms.
