Am I allergic to corn?

My wife is allergic to corn products. Besides corn syrup and corn starch, what else has corn in it?

  • Product labels show corn syrup and corn starch, but I've heard a lot of other food ingredients are made from corn. I don't know what's OK for her to eat.

    You need to read ingredient panels very carefully. Whole wheat bread, canned foods, frozen foods, snack foods, white bread, candy . . . all have corn products in them. Unfortunately, corn syrup/corn starch are used in so many food products, so your best bet is to try to eat whole unprocessed foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables. Look for whole grain breads, like 7-grain or 12-grain. Cook your own pasta and make your own tomato sauce (yup, tomato sauce often times has corn syrup in it).

Everything pretty much has corn starch or syrup in it. My mom is allergic to the same thing. She just tries to avoid foods containing it as much as she can. Hard I know... but what else can ya do?

Another great reason NOT to eat packaged foods... we all eat way to much unhealthy prefab stuff anyway. Half the packaged products in the average American grocery store have high fructose corn syrup or some other poison in them, and its killing us. Time to go back to basics. You definitely can, and we all should, base most of our diet on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean protein from chicken and fish and soy, and good pure spring water. Yes, it means you have to actually COOK, but guess what... you might find that you like it, and there are plenty of easy recipes around that don't take much time to prepare at all.

Most of the canned goods have corn syrup on them as a preservative... like ketchup etc...
