Do I have a slight latex allergy?

Latex allergy getting severe fast.Doc not taking me seriously.Second opion or just suck it up?

  • I am a Personal Care Attendant and we are always are using latex gloves as they are much cheaper than the latex free.Which I now wear. So after many years of getting slight symptoms like Burning around the area touched by ANY latex, including condoms and balloons. Redness. Burning. Pain. And itchiness. My allergy has now suddenly got very much worse. Just recently at work I was restocking the gloves,NOT wearing them, but they came in contact with my skin. After a few minutes my hand and all the way up my arm was on fire!Red welts, swelling, blisters.Pain and burning. And itchy like crazy! Does any one know what I mean? We had no choice but to take me to the ER where I was given a strong dose of an antihistamine Phernagon which worked well. I have suffered a severe anaphalatic attack from a med before, so I saw my Dr about this ASAP only to be told to "change jobs."Or avoid latex at all costs.Told me it was NOT anaphalatis. • Answer:

If you have an allergy to latex, your employer is required by law to supply you with latex free gloves. If you purchase your own gloves for work, they are tax deductible. If there is any chance, during your duties, to come into contact with a latex product, put on a pair of your latex free gloves and wear a long sleeve shirt. Latex allergies can become quite severe and life threatening. Also, if you push the issue with your employer, they may be resentful and make working there a living hell. You might want to find a new employer so that you can leave this one on YOUR terms and not theirs. Make sure to voice in any interview that you have a SEVERE latex allergy. If the symptoms you are experiencing are localized to the contact site such as hives, swelling, & itching, then you did not experience anaphalaxis as that is an emergency situation involving the trachea closing up from swelling blocking your ability to breathe; this is not saying that you WON'T have that severe a reaction eventually. Also get your doctor to give you a prescription for an epi-pen. This is a self administered dosage of epinephrine (adrenaline) that may just save your life if you ever do suffer an anaphalactic response to latex.

Well, the word is "anaphylaxis" and it is nothing to fool around with. I'd change doctors. Systemic anaphylaxis can kill.

Listen To Your Doctor And Get Another Job If That Is The Best Thing For You

about the company not providing the other gloves: file a grievance after consulting with allergist!! And do consult with an allergist!! Doctors sometimes think they know it all but don't know squat!! Mine told me I could eat potatoes and breads!! They do not have to live in our skin, WE do!! Avoid as much of the latex as possible and see an allergist.

Get a second opinion, it's much to serious a reaction to not obtain one. How easy it is for a doctor to say change jobs. Also see if your company can get the other type of gloves, if they haven't already. Wishing you good health, and good luck.

I would go and get a second opinion. This is something to take serious.
