Why is the skin under eyes so delicate?

My skin around my eyes is very itchy, does anyone know why?

  • ok so it's not exactley my eyes just the the skin around my eyes, like my eye lids and the lids below your eye. They are dry and very itchy! Also kind of swollen sometimes. And I have been rubbing them like crazy so now I have lines/wrinkles which I think was caused by the rubbing. Someone told me maybe allergys. So I took allergy medicine, and that hasn't worked yet. I've tryed lotion and eye creme. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to make it stop itching and to get rid of the lines? Please help!! Thanks sooooooo much!!!

  • Answer:

You could be allergic to a soap, shampoo, makeup, lotion, or practically anything. Eyes are very sensitive and sometimes the first or only thing affected. It could be conjuntivitis, aka "Pink Eye", or many other possible causes. I suggest seeing a doctor if this problem doesn't clear up soon. Good luck!

Yes, it probably is due to allergies. Irritated eyes tend to be a persistent problem for us allergy sufferers. Antihistamines will help to block the histamine response the body has to allergens. They treat the body as a whole. Different ones have different effectiveness, depending upon the person and their unique body chemistry. Our allergist recommended Claritin for my daughter and had us give her an additional antihistamine / decongestant at night-time or before school. The Claritin works over 24hrs. The other "booster' works for usually 4-6 hours. Actifed, Dimetap, and Tavist work well. Just make sure they do not use the same ingredient as Claritin - otherwise you an get an overdose. (The companies keep changing their formulas each year and some are adding a Loratadine (claritin) ingredient in some new variants. The other thing that can help is to use an eye drops that has an Anti-histamine additive. Visine -A and V.Rohto are two examples. You have to give the medicine time to take effect and start reducing your histamine levels. Longer term - go see a doctor or an allergist. They have blood tests available to help you pinpoint which items in the environment you are reacting to. Reducing your exposure to them will help you out.

I would think allergies, I get itchy skin around my eyes as well from all of the rubbing, and using eye drops helps!

If you wear mascara and eye shadows, or eye liner, that might be the culprit. Use a little baby oil on a cotton ball and sweep from the inner corner of your eye, outwards. Then wash your eyes with eye makeup remover. That should do the trick if they are being bugged by makeup.
