What do I do if I go into anaphylaxis at school?
-
My peanut/tree nut allergy is life-threatening, and I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to do if I ever go into anaphylaxis at school. My teachers are aware of it, but I haven't had a reaction since I was two, and then, I was close to death in minutes. My guess would be, if it were to happen, it would happen at lunch, where sometimes people eating PB&J are sitting two people down from me. Should I go to the office which would give me my EPIpen, but sometimes people aren't there, which would be wasted minutes. I know how to use an EPI pen, but I remember when I was younger and had a reaction, I was shaking badly and my mjom said if I ever had a reaction, don't use the EPIpen by myself.

Answer:
What grade are you in BTW? If the school says you are not allowed to carry the Epi-Pen with you on your person, and they keep it in the office, then some school personel has to be there at ALL TIMES. Tell your mom that sometime the office people are not there. This is serious! If you need your medication ( that they are keeping from you) and they are not there to give it to you in an emergency, then I would be sueing my childs school. Have your mom call and say that she is concerned. Have her say.. "My daughter has an EpiPen on file at the office. It has come to my attention that sometimes the office is empty at times and there is no adult there to help. Even though it may be for a few minutes, my child won't have a few minutes when she is in anaphalic shock and needs her medication. I am very concerned and ask that she be allowed to carry her medicine in her purse. Otherwise, I would expect the office position to be staffed and NEVER left unattended when children are on campus." Your health can be at stake due to neglagence of the school staff. All in all, the school is concerned that the pen will be used incorectly or abused. They don't want to get in trouble if another student takes your meds or you take it incorrectly. But they will be in more trouble if you die of lack of medication, because they are not there to give it to you. Your Epi pen should come with a trainer Epi Pen. If you didn't get one, ask the phamacist for one. There are also on-line videos that instruct you on how to administer the medication. Wear a medical alert bracelet and also print out instructions on how to handle your allergy and administer the EPI to all your teachers and the office. Remember to have the office call 911 and your mom after you take the medication. If you have to, you may have to give it to yourself. Give it yourself in your outter, upper thigh.

As a paramedic, I think that you should have your doctor either teach hoe to use an EPI pen or ask him/her abouth other alternatives. You have to be prepared if nobody is around!

Tell a few of your closest friends, and always make sure they are near you when you are eating lunch. Have a gesture or code word or something so if you are unable to run to the office then they can. Remember to talk to the staff at the office to let them know that these certain people (make sure you can trust them) are allowed to get your epi-pen if they ask for it. Tell the office staff how worried you are about it, and maybe they can let you know where it is in case someone isn't there. I think clear, concise communication is what's needed here. If you have a plan, there is less chance you will panic.

I think you should be able to carry it.
You carry the pen, correctly? &you sit by people you know&TRUST? if so, tell them about the pen and where it is, and what to do if you DO have a reaction.

You should carry your epi pen with you and tell your home room teacher and your close friends how to use it.

I think you were traumatized by that time when you were younger & shaking & that made you believe you would never be able to give yourself the Epipen. Now you're older and I think you would be able to do it. I think what your mother said scared you but it seems your mother may be overly protective. You said you know how to use the Epipen, so I think you should keep it with you & use it if needed. Practice if you need to. Hold on to the Epipen & then someone can always look for the nurse or an adult. Go girl, you can do it!
