How long does it take to heal after arthroscopy?

How long does it take a knee to heal after having had an arthroscopy to smoothen cartilage in the knee?

  • I'm 17, I had the surgery on Feb 20 2006 and I still can't walk up stairs with complete comfort!

  • Answer:

This is very dependent on the extent of the damage and which tendon was repaired (ACL? MCL? Meniscus?) 3 months is not unusual for arthroscopic recovery, but recovery is definitely related to whether you fully committed yourself to your physical therapy/rehab routine. If you still have significant pain, you should return to your orthopedic surgeon for further workup. If your ortho is dismissive, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion. I've had three arthro surgeries - my first surgeon was a quack who really messed up my tendons, so BE AWARE! just because they are MDs does not make them infallible!

My boyfriend had surgery that smoothed the cartilage of his knee in December, he is 10 yrs. older than you and went through PT for 2 months and now is almost %100. He works out and plays v-ball and b-ball 3 to 4 times a week with no real pain. Stick with your Physical Therapy and don't push yourself to the point of pain and you should be fine. Good luck.
