What is water weight?

What does water weight mean?

  • So I've heard of the term "water weight" but I am not quite sure what it means? All I know is that when people lose weight really fast it is called water weight, can anyone explain it to me?

  • Answer:

It's when your body retains extra water, often due to excessive sodium (salt) consumption. "Its possible to retain up to five pounds of water weight retention and can easily be hidden within the natural fluid that surrounds cells ( extra-cellular fluid ). Heavier people may experience more water retention especially if their intake of processed, convenient food is high. For some it can be as much as eight to ten pounds of fluid retention if weight gain is quick say over the Christmas season. There are a few causes of water retention but for many an increase in sodium through the diet ( mainly salt intake ) is a common cause and research suggests it may contribute to high blood pressure and other health complications. Sodium is present in virtually all food products, so when a person consumes more food it's inevitable they also consume more sodium. Weight gains are very often a combination of fat stores and water retention."

Your body retains a certain amount of water, and this is therefore water weight. So for example you way 120lbs but in actuality you really way if you pee'd your brains out like 110-115lbs. If you drink a lot of soda regular or diet soda has a lot of sodium content and sodium retains more water. So you typically weigh more because of your drinking soda, as to if you were drinking water. Also never weigh yourself when after you just ate, the best time to weigh yourself is right when you wake up before you eat your breakfast that way you will know approx where your at.

Your body is composed of quite a bit of water. When you lose weight really fast most times it's just water leaving you not actual fat.

Nate

water weight is basically when you aren't drinking enough water, so when you drink a lot of it it's basically when you pee you get rid of it so the more water you drink the more you loose

Well, when you have food it stores water in your body, to help break it down and stuff, but when you start exercising and eating healthier then it all goes away.

because sometimes people retain lots of water and when they lose weight quickly it's usually because they lost the water they were retaining and not actual fat.
