How does an unmotivated person become motivated?
-
I'm 25 years old and in my opinion severely overweight by 130 lbs at least. Lately I've become very depressed and just overall unmotivated. My house is a mess and every time I make an attempt to clean I get overwhelmed and give up and it gets worse. I used to love being outdoors, going for walks every day with my dogs and now I have no desire to do it. I do but I dont, I guess that doesnt make any sense. I've never been skinny but I used to be happy with myself. I can see already this is going to be everywhere. Let me somewhat start over. 1. I'm depressed ( undiagnosed ) 2. Overweight Nope I guess that was right. Basically I need to know if anyone has any suggestions to help me get motivated. Tomorrow I plan on starting out slow with trying to clean one room of my house and going for a small walk. But I have a feeling that I'll give up even though i wont want to. lol God this sounds awful. Just laziness maybe? Either way - I need help getting motivated. Any ideas?

Answer:
Two things: First, people become unmotivated when they perceive the challenge as too large. So don't think about next month or year. Just take it one day at a time. Starting by cleaning one small room is a good example. Cleaning the whole house is overwhelming. But take on one small room every few days and you will see real results. Same thing with weight. No, colon cleansing is not the answer. If you are really 130 lbs overweight and you have no underlying health condition, it's a matter of diet and exercise. Start by cutting out extra snacks and replacing some unhealthy foods with healthier alternatives. Start walking 15 mins per day, and next week make it 30. Over a few months you will see real results. Now, the second thing: Depression is a serious medical condition. If you believe you are depressed, see a professional counselor. He or she can make a diagnosis very quickly. And if you are depressed, there is help. There are many successful medications out there, and there are therapeutic approaches that can yield great results. Don't give up. It sounds like you want to make the effort to change, and that's a really good start.

You generally get unmotivated when what you realize what you're trying to achieve is really ******* hard. Best thing to do is to set small *** goals like jog for thirty seconds, tomorrow i'll jog for thirty five seconds. Small *** steps like the best way to get **** done.

Think of all the consequences of being unmotivated. (Make a list) The list will probably be an eye opener and may possibly give you motivation to change. You could also try surrounding yourself with happy/succesful people. Start small & Reward yourself when you do something. For instance, clean sections of your house and put on your favorite music...invite people over to admire your clean house.. When worst comes to worse...THINK about it like this...you only have ONE life to live.... Make a difference...

I am 58 years old and I think I have been depressed all of my life. Not long ago, I was 110 pounds overweight, but in 2008 I have lost 50 pounds. Talk therapy and medicine can be very beneficial. With some people, the medicine makes the depression go away entirely. Visit some therapists and pick one you like. See a psychiatrist for the medicine. Psychiatrists have a much better understanding of these medicines than a family physician does, and you are likely to have a better result with a psychiatrist. I'd also like to suggest the book, "Changing for Good." It was written by psychologists who studied thousands of people who had made significant changes in their lives, like losing weight or quitting smoking. They found that these people went through six stages and that at each stage they used certain techniques to move to the next stage. Their book explains how to apply it to any specific situation. These are a couple of short summaries of the method, http://personaldevelopment.suite101.com/article.cfm/successful_lifestyle_changes http://www.proactivechange.com/motivation/change-theory/ and you can buy the book at Amazon, as well as elsewhere. http://www.amazon.com/Changing-Good-Revolutionary-Overcoming-Positively/dp/038072572X Even if you don't clean your house tomorrow, get out and do something. Maybe you could go for a walk in a park, or in a mall (where you could also look at the men!) Good luck to you!

I think you should concentrate on being more active first. My wife and I went through the same thing about a year ago. She had gained over 100 lbs due to steroids for a lung condition. I had just gotten lazy and overweight. We had tried walking etc at home but never seemed to follow through. Finally we joined the neighborhood Y and started going and just doing a little at first. I think by going to a gym and being in that atmosphere is really good at getting you out of the rut. So the main thing at first is not what you do but that you get there. eventually you will start to feel better and it will just build from there.

It's not laziness, it's depression (mild). Don't clean the house as of yet. Start with a nice walk but don't go to far, stick near your house but kind of circle it. Later on see how you feel and maybe have a little tidy or another walk. The key here is to get out more and then when you come home you won't want to look at the mess and you will have a little tidy. I've suffered with depression since I was 15 (31) and exercise changed my life. I believe in exercise that much that I've trained as a Gym Instructor so I can help people like me and you. Believe me I've tried everything. I was a cocaine addict, alcoholic and prescription drug addict and none work. E-mail me if I can help at all, alot of people stay in touch.
