Does eating protein along with carbs lower the carb effect on blood sugar and insulin levels?

So lets say we have a hamburger with white bread buns, will the protein of the hamburger lower the effect on blood sugar and insulin from eating the white bread?

Yes. Anytime carbohydrates are eaten with proteins and/or fats, the digestion of the carbohydrate will be slowed causing blood sugar and insulin levels to rise slower. On that note, you mention 'white bread buns', which is a very high-glycemic carbohydrate. This means that it will convert into blood sugar much quicker than, say, a low-glycemic carbohydrate like oatmeal. The reason that the glycemic-index is high for the white bread is because the fiber has been taken out, so it is absorbed much faster by the body. Added macro-nutrients like protein and fats can slow absorption, but if you're worried about spiking blood and insulin levels, you should consider replacing those white bread buns with higher fiber all bran buns. :)
