Which burns more calories, treadmill or elliptical?
-
I'm almost due to give birth, and I was wondering if it would be better for me, a treadmill or elliptical? Money is tight, I can't join a gym. I can invest in one piece of exercise equipment. Really, I want to lose the weight I've gained so burning calories is good.

I agree with Mr. Above me. Why pay for a machine to do something for you when you can just as easily do it outisde. Plus I find walking/jog/running outdoors is more satisfying and refreshing anyhow you can chose what surface you want to run on, you get fresh air, it goes a lot faster, incorporate a pet/buddy/kids, etc... I have an elliptical at home. I absolutely love it. *) It's a lot easier on my knee's than a treadmill. *) It's smooth! *) You can change your settings from entering your personal information (height, weight, age, sex) and chose from different programs! *) It's way quieter than a treadmill. I can workout without the t.v. blasting and still hear my show. *) It's also easier to work your upperbody. I find it hard to hold hand weights on a treadmill, but on my elipt I will sometimes hold 3 lb weights and move my arms. *) Personally, I remember my treadmill taking up way more space than my eliptical.

you can burn the same amount of calories on each machine depending on how hard you work. elipticals are nice because you can set the resistance and speed to your liking and formulate intervals to increase intensity, for example: 17 minutes on the eliptical= 1 min. warm up, resistance- 4 30 sec. increase pace, resistance-8 1 min. 30 sec. regular pace, resistance -4 do intervals of the increased pace and regular pace for 17 minutes and you can burn up to 200 calories. it is not hard to do either since you have 1:30 min to rest in between the intervals. the eliptical is nice for this type of workout because you can quickly increase/decrease speed and resistance, whereas on a treadmill it is more dangerous to do so at such a quick pace because you may fall off or injure yourself due to the abrupt change. another scenario is that elipticals are natural movement. no matter what, you are the one causing the free movement on the machine. on a treadmill, you are moving on a belt. and lastly, you can always get the same effect, if not a much better effect, as the treadmill by just going and running or walking outside. if you want resistance, choose to go up a hill. and that's free! also, exercise bikes are an excellent form of cardio, as well. not to mention a great way to tone up your bottom half :) that's a lot of stuff right there, but i hope it helped at least a little. good luuck and stay motivated, i know you can do it :)
