When getting braces, are there needles involved!?
-
I just found out I'm getting braces before school starts which is in like 2 weeks and I am HORRIFIED of needles! When I got my shots in the arm for school, it took ALL of my will-power to stand still. Of course I cried, but I DID NOT move! But I draw the lines at getting a needle stuck IN MY MOUTH!! Please tell me if there are needles involved to like numb me or something!? I just found out that they don't drill holes in your teeth to put braces in yesterday (LOL) and I have been jumpy and all I could think about was if there will be needles involved. I'm almost 13, so I'm not used to shots like older people. Like I said, I've cooperated for arm shots but I will NEVER get a needle in my mouth unless they strap me down. NOW I know they "glue" braces on and don't drill BIG holes in your teeth but now I'm worried about needles. I personally don't think they use them for braces because they don't do surgery or anything, all they do is glue them on... but I'd like to be positive before I go so I can be relaxed! PLEASE help me!! (I think I'm just getting them on the bottom, but nobody tells me anything :) PLEASE help me! Thanks!!♥

Im in the same situation together but they don't use needles for when they put your braces in. It is gonna hurt but it will be worth it because you will have beautiful teeth. Well, They do hurt at first. It will just take you a while to get used to them....the first few months are bad...but it will get easier. Some tips: 1.Cold foods feel soooo good...(ice cream, smoothies...ect) 2.Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil whichever you prefer. This helps take the edge off. Take it before your appt & After. 3.SLEEP! lol Try to keep your mind occupied. The first day I got mine...I watched movies and ate ice-cream most the day. ;) 4. Get some Arnica Montana...It's a homeopathic medicine. You could probably get some at a health-food store. But let me tell you....It dose WONDERS!!! Just take some right before your appt, and then right after. My last appt was pain free! ( I used the Arnica) My teeth were a little sore but...not at all like it used to be. Just remember it's soooo worth it! :D Your teeth are going to look GREAT & you'll be GORGEOUS! When you go to the orthodontist to get your braces put on, they will first take your spacers out, which are rubber pieces wedged between your teeth so the metal bands will fit.(if you have them) Then, the orthodontist puts a plastic lip separator in your mouth, which keeps your lips from going on your teeth. Carefully, the orthodontist glues the brackets on each tooth, then dries the glue with a plasma light. Try not to taste the glue, because it will taste terrible. (keep your tongue back) Then the arch wire is threaded through each bracket, and tightened so it fits snugly. After this, you are done. the orthodontist will put 0-rings on your brackets which are available in a variety of colors. Your mouth will probably be a bit sore after, so don't eat anything hard for a while. The pain will go away in about 2 or 3 days . But the whole process is pretty quick and painless. It will hurt for a little while after... :( But try to keep your mind occupied. Within a week or two you'll be used to it. Make sure you take something before your visits. The hardest part is getting used to the new feeling and getting used to seeing yourself in them. The time will go really quickly and you'll get to a stage where you won't even realize that you have braces because it will become such a normal part of you!!! After you get them off remember to wear your retainer! That's super important!!!! :) Lots of people have braces these days so I am sure you won't be alone. :) Don't worry about looking funny....Braces are sooo common now. Just keep thinking how beautiful you'll look when they are off! ;) Youll be fine there should be NO needles so you will be ok. Smile :D

Nope. No needles. I remember being just like you before I got mine on...I was SOOOO scared! But honestly it's nothing to worry about. Ok so from your VERY first orthodontist appt this is what will happen: 1. Appt- They will look at your teeth, take pictures, make impressions with the gross pink stuff. 2.Appt- If you need teeth extracted...or spacers...or and expander or anything like that they will do that. 3.Appt- You'll probably get your braces on by then. This is what will happen: When you go to the orthodontist to get your braces put on, they will first take your spacers out, which are rubber pieces wedged between your teeth so the metal bands will fit. Then, the orthodontist puts a plastic lip separator in your mouth, which keeps your lips from going on your teeth. I actually think the blue light they use is very relaxing! ;) Actually getting them on, like the procedure itself doesn't hurt at all. The bottoms might hurt after you get up from the chair. I just got my bottom ones on three days ago and the pain is FINALLY going away. It will hurt for a little while after... :( But try to keep your mind occupied. I hope you have a good experience with Braces!! :D Please contact me if you have ANY questions! I know how weird it can be when you don't know what to expect. :/

NO OF COURSE NOT (lol) They don't use any sort of needles. There's no point. They put the braces on your teeth not your gums. I was all jumpy about that too. Hope I helped! ~Jojo anyone answer mine? It's similar to this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkoeMjN0ICd.a1tcgCveP3fsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090804064139AAZ2ScI

Haha noo!!! I have had them twice in two different phases. The worst I think you will have to worry about is how long your mouth will be wide open... its like forever and also about the nasty taste glue stuff. Or that's what I think any way. Haha, Everything is fine and it will be so worth it. Remember to wear your retainers!!! Haha Good Luck!!

There are no needles whatsoever :) I know how you feel about them, and I would never ever get any needles in my mouth either. All they will do, is they will polish your teeth, so the glue for the braces will stick better, and they will just stick on the brackets, and harden the glue. To harden the glue, they use a light thing, and it makes the glue harden a lot faster. It doesn't hurt, so don't fret :) when they finish putting the brackets on, they will put in the wire, and then they will put the little ties/elastics on, so the wire doesn't fall out. You even get to choose what colour you want! Right now, I have glow in the dark pink and green! I recommend that you take a Tylonel or something before you go in, because you mouth will probably be sore, because your teeth will start to move. You could also ask someone to take you out for milkshakes after you get your braces on! You should buy some really soft foods, like soup, and pudding, applesauce, Jell-o, etc.., because it will be really hard to eat for the first few days. Just make sure you brush and floss everyday, and keep your teeth clean! Remember: no surgery or needles whatsoever! Hope I helped!:)

You're right, there are no needles involved, just glue, wires, and rubber bands. They do use wire cutters to trim the wires once they're ligatured on to keep them from poking you, but that's as unpleasant as it gets and the dental assistants know what they're doing. It just feels like someone flicked the inside of your cheek when the wire bit pops off, it doesn't hurt or anything. In the days after you get your braces on your teeth will probably hurt but it's a dull ache as opposed to sharp pains. Stock up on yogurt, pudding, apple sauce, and similar foods.
