How well are you supposed to rinse your mouth out after brushing?

Should you rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth?

  • I've always rinsed my mouth with water after brushing my teeth but I just started thinking, doesn't it flush the fluoride out which is supposed to cover my teeth and protect from bacteria? So I'm sort of thinking that I should just spit the excess toothpaste out of my mouth and let the rest cover my teeth and protect them as it's actually supposed to. Am I right about this? Or how does the whole thing work?

  • Answer:

No, it's totally fine to rinse. Most toothpastes contain stuff that's best not kept in the mouth (like bleaches, preservatives, etc). The whole fluoride argument is completely specious. You get all the fluoride you need from your water supply unless you're pre-adolescent. Besides, fluoride is readily absorbed into teeth and the mucuos membranes on the mouth- keeping it there longer won't make any difference.

You are absolutley right, dont have to rinse with water. Doctors actually say its better if you dont. You could rinse after brushing ur teeth but then use mouthwash.

Nope, it's fine. I always do too. It rubs on your teeth and sticks to it. Water doesn't effect it.
