How long do you have to wear retainers after you take your braces off?

  • So next month, I'm taking my braces off, and I want to know how long I'll have to wear them and when do I wear them. like, for example, some ppl have to wear them for 2 years, day and night. some ppl wear them when they go to sleep. i dont want to keep on wearing retainers for a while... wearing braces seem a bit stressing since i cant eat some of my fav foods >.<

    When your braces are taken off they will tell you how long you have to wear them and at what points in the day. I have invisalign retainers and had to wear them all day and at night when I slept for the first year and a half, then I could wear them only when I slept.. Everyone I know sort of just slowly stopped wearing theirs after a few years, and their teeth are fine. Others are paranoid and wear them for a really long time after in fear of their teeth spacing again. But after usually three, four years your teeth are use to the new placement and won't separate. If you notice spacing, just slip the retainers back on.

I’m a dentist. The answer is that it depends on the amount of movement and the type of movement your teeth underwent during orthodontic therapy. Although any orthodontic movement can end in relapse (i.e. where the tooth moves back out of place), some are more prone to it than others. It also depends on how straight you want to keep your teeth over the course of your life. Keep in mind that some patients can conceivably have to wear their retainers at night for the rest of their life. In my experience, most patients who stop wearing their retainers end up having some relapse. Also, with time the lower teeth move forward in the jaws and become crowded/crooked. Hence, most older patients who have had braces in the past will end up having some crookedness of their lower incisors. If you want to avoid this, you’ll need to wear your lower retainer for the rest of your life.

It really depends on your body. Some people do have them on for years, some only have them for a few months. You have to ask your own doctor.
