Is it safe to make your own toothpaste?

  • Is it safe to make your own toothpaste? i read in a health book that suggest making your own toothpaste -salt -baking soda -vegetable oil -lemon juice -powdered ginger -and half of the mixture is your regular toothpaste is this safe? here's the book. http://www.amazon.com/Can-We-Live-150-Years/dp/0972732845/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207588117&sr=8-1 it said some toothpastes have dangerously high fluoride content. also, that some yoga gurus use a powdered salt, oil mixture in place of toothpaste. i'll do anything if it means better health. but i just wanted to double check if this wasn't harmful.

I am a dentist. The amount of fluoride in toothpaste if only dangerous if you continuously swallow large amounts. Otherwise the fluoride will not harm you. Why in the world would you want to make your own toothpaste? Baking soda and salts are very abrasive and can tear away the enamel surface after repeated use. This is what happened when people use whitening toothpaste too often

There are no ingredients listed here that will harm you. It sounds like it might be a fun thing to do. Go for it. As to the fluoride content. I had fluoride treatments in the Army 40 years ago. They've added fluoride to our drinking water. I have had no ill effects, so I believe the negative side of this is overstated.
