Extremely sensitive teeth, what could it be?

Pregnancy has given me horribly sensitive teeth, what to do?

  • Ever since I've hit the third trimester my teeth and gums have started really hurting. My gums feel really sensitive and I keep getting random tooth aches in what seems like all of my back teeth at once. Why is this? I never got this with my first and I keep up with my dental hygene, regardless of it being painful to brush at the moment. Is there anything I can do to stop it, if it's caused by anything in particular? I've got 8 weeks until little man is due but it's starting to feel like all my teeth are going to drop out by then, I swear my gums are receding, it's making me scared to brush properly :( I'm 20 years old so it's not an age thing either, I've also had a wisdom tooth fully come through whilst pregnant. It started coming through before becoming pregnant and gosh, painful! But I couldn't have it taken out because the root was so close to my nerves and it could've made my face go numb permanently. It's fully through now though. Could that possibly be a reason as to why the rest of my teeth are feeling like this? Someone once told me if you let wisdom tooth come right through it pushes your other teeth out the way... I intend on seeing the dentist soon but due to moving I'm not currently registered with one. I need this to stop in the mean time! Any advice?

  • Answer:

All through your pregnancy you have been entitled to free dental treatment on the NHS. All this time you could have been in contact with a dentist and dealt with your fears. The fact you are moving is not relevant and you can see one now and then transfer when you move. Do it as soon as possible as the changes in pregnancy are the reasons that the care is offered free so that you take up the care. It is not to save you money it is because problems occur. You also cannot afford the risk of infection at this late stage and need to rule this out as well. Think about your baby and get this done.

When you are pregnant your estrogen and progesterone hormone levels increase. Your gums have receptors for these hormones and can often become puffy and hypersensitive (my wife has had this happen with every pregnancy). The best thing you can do is excellent dental care, brushing flossing, and use a mouth rinse (crest pro health , or listerine). If it has been more than 6 months since your last professional dental cleaning, consider getting your teeth cleaned. :)

sounds like you need more calcium! when your pregnant and the baby is trying to form bones and such if you don't have enough calcium it will actually draw it out from your bones, teeth, etc!

If your teeth are sensitive I'd recommend sensodyne toothpaste or sensitive-relief Colgate toothpaste. They're both highly recommended by dentists including mine.

You do not mention in what way your teeth are sensitive. There is: Cold, Hot, Touch, & Air Sensitive. Buy a small bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide. While standing over a sink, Swish about a half-cup of it, around in your mouth for as long as you can stand to, then spit it all out (in to the sink). Okay to rinse after wards with water, to get the taste out of your mouth. Repeat it about 4 times a day. Do not brush your teeth for a few days, Continue treatment until either your teeth/gums are healed or you have seem a dentist. About "Hydrogen Peroxide": 1. It is an antiseptic. 2. Foams when in contact with Bacteria. Mouth is full of good & bad Bacteria. 3. Should NOT be swallowed. Read the Label. 4.Taste while not good or wonderful, still a little in the side. 5. Sun & time kills it effectiveness. Throw out if over a month old after it has been opened. I am ASSUMING: You may have a bad case of Gingivitis. Brush your teeth while make matters worse. See a Dentist really soon. Because you are pregnant, do NOT take Aspirin. After the child is born, do NOT give Aspirin to him/her until its teen years. Ask your Doctor about "Reyes Syndrome".
