Can I get IV sedation for labial frenectomy?
-
I am seriously worrying about this, just the thought of being awake while the dentist or whoever sticks a needle in my mouth, then a knife. And just the blood in my mouth freaks me out. Would they be able to use IV sedation on Me if I requested it?

Answer:
Just a heads up,you may not want them to give you the drug called Versed ( Midazolam ) In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time. Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is commonly administered in combination with anesthesia before and during surgery. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscience sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!Forgetting does no mean it did not happen!! Amnesia does NOT take place for some patients. IT'S NOT MY INTENTION FOR YOU TO NOT GET THE PROCEDURE DONE, JUST INFORMING YOU THAT YOU MAY WANT IT DONE WITH ANOTHER DRUG!!!!! Here is a note from someone that did use versed I know I was sedated, I don't remember anything.. but I know I was screaming, everyone could hear me.. My thing is how was I screaming if I'm knocked out.

Hi - First of all, try to relax a little more about this - it's really a very short procedure - 5 minutes, tops. You probably could get IV sedation for this, but because it's so quick, I think a better option for you might be nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and novocaine. Nitrous oxide doesn't put you to sleep, but it gets you very, very mellow - almost in a trance-like state, where you really don't worry about anything. It's an enjoyable feeling, and many people get the giggles, which is why it's called laughing gas. You would hardly be aware of the injection, and even if you were, you wouldn't care. When the dentist is done, he turn off the nitrous, and you breathe straight oxygen for a couple of minutes. Your head clears, and you're back to yourself right away, with none of the sometimes unpleasant side effects of IV sedation, like dizziness and grogginess. You should give this some thought - I've seen this done many times, and you won't believe how quick this procedure is, from start to finish. And the nitrous really does work, especially along with the novocaine. It's also safer. So, calm down -- it's nowhere near as bad as an extraction - quicker than a filling, even -- you'll be fine! Really! ***Good luck - hope this helped!
