Do I need to remove wisdom teeth?

If you have your wisdom teeth removed do you need to remove the opposite ones above them as well?

  • I have to have my two lower wisdom teeth removed. The dentist says I must remove the two opposite upper teeth as well as they will continue to grow now that they have nothing to stop them below. I know of people who have wisdom teeth removed and none of them have had the teeth above taken out as well.

  • Answer:

It is recommended that the opposing wisdom teeth are taken out as well. there are a couple reasons why. The first being that if you take out say, the two on top, the two on the bottom become useless as they have nothing above them to meet with, so they have no function. Second, if you take out let's say the two wisdom teeth on the bottom, the opposing teeth on top will seek out a surface to meet. They will start to drop down. This will lead to root structure becoming exposed, which can be very painful. Also, if they start to drop, they will not stop until they meet something, this may cause you to start biting the gum tissue where the wisdom teeth were removed on the bottom. this can be very painful. good luck

Dollie24 is right. Plus, there is one more reason. Let's say that you had a painful experience with this removal, but later down the line you NEED the other ones extracted. You are NOW afraid to have it done, because you remember it being bad. SO, you don't do it. NOT that that's gonna happen, but it's a chance. So just get them all out. You don't need them, plus they are hard to clean anyhow.

im not so sure why they just didnt take them out all at the sametime. i dont think that such a thing would happen. but then again im not a dentist. when i had mine done just a few months ago they took them all out. not really explaining much.

I have personally never heard of this. Your dentist might be just encouraging you to get them all out at the same time. You will most likely need to have the other ones removed at some point, so it is better to just get them all out in one session. You should speak to your dentist again to clarify any questions you have.

I've heard that removing all of them at the same time is a common practice, but I've never heard your story before. I only had my upper ones removed and now I don't feel like having the lower ones extracted. I think I should have done all of them at the same time.

Take 'em out!

yes they should take them all out at the same time you don't need them they will cause you problems and going through the procedure once is better than going through it twice

Your dentist is trying to rip you off for more money..This is a common practice in the medical profession..

Get all four of them out at once! I just had all four of mine extracted 3 days ago. If i would've just had two extracted i would not want to go back and have the other two extracted later. Take my advice, just go through it once and get it all over with!
