How do they take off braces?

How long does it take for elastic bands to sort out an overbite and how long until my braces come off?

I've had my braces for 11 months now and about a month ago i had my elastic bands put on. My orthodontist told me to wear them 24/7 and when i sleep double up on the elastics (2 on each side) how long will it take for the elastic bands to sort out my overbite and how long will it be until my braces come off? all of my teeth are now straight and aligned, its just my overbite and the gaps where my teeth were extracted still left to close. i'm 17 and would really like them off soon, any ideas as to how long i have left with braces? :)
