Horrible jaw pain without a cause.

Could an injection at the Dentist cause pain in your ear and jaw for weeks after the procedure?

  • While having a couple of fillings replaced I was given an injection and it felt like the needle went through my ear, I raised my hand for the dentist to stop and she said that I just have a lot of muscle back there. That night when the numbness wore off I was in so much pain and my face was swollen. The pain was in my ear, jaw and the side of my neck. I returned the following morning to see another dentist, I was told that perhaps the other dentist hit a nerve hub and that the pain should go away in a few days and I was given a perscription for pain killers. Well it's about 3 weeks since that happened and I still have pain in my ear and jaw. I went to the doctor and I was referred to an ENT specialist but my appointment isn't until next month. What happened and what's going on??? Who do I see about this problem?

  • Answer:

I am very serious when I say you need to consult a lawyer. The dentist damaged nerves and tissue which may or may not partially or totally regenerate. If they don't, you are going to be like that the rest of your life. A lawyer can advise you on your next step. Call one today.

You should call the ENT and tell them you DON"T have a month to wait for your appointment and that you are in pain and need to be seen NOW!

your face shouldn't be swollen. I had 2 cavities done with no pain meds. If there on top, you shouldn't feel them. Dr either did something wrong or you have tetnis. how long has it been since you had that shot for tetnis? Have you heard of lock jaw What are the symptoms of tetanus? A common first sign of tetanus is muscular stiffness in the jaw (lockjaw), followed by stiffness of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, rigidity of abdominal muscles, spasms, sweating and fever. You can die of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetanus http://www.answers.com/topic/tetanus

He could have nicked a nerve. Not a big deal as it will eventually heal. However......there is a condition known as mastoiditis that could present like what you have. It is life threatening. You MUST go to your ENT appointment. And you should go to the emergency room if you run a high fever, feel dizzy, nauseous or otherwise really sick. Mastoiditis is an infection in the area where your jaw connects to your skull through a joint. Your brain is on the other side of the bone there. It's actually very much like an abscess. If it breaks through to the brain side, you are in BIG trouble. The ENT will be able to quickly tell if there is anything you should be worried about.

Hello =) I would make another "emergency appointment" with the dentist, to at least get some more pain medicine until your ENT appointment. Sounds like an unfortunate incident, but these things do happen. Namaste, --Tom

You need to tell the specialist that you are in severe pain. They will move your appt. up to a sooner time. You may also want to go to the emergency room for faster results. But they may just give you pain killers and refer you to a specialist. Call your insurance provider if you have one and they may recommend a few specialists who could get you in sooner.

it should not....get it checked now....you may be sorry and on top of that you can start a medical malpractice case too...
