How do I get my daughters to take better care of her teeth?
-
I always have to keep after her to brush, and she avoids it whenever she can. She's had quite a few teeth pulled already for a 13 year old, and a lot of fillings too, but she just won't take care of her teeth. She's fussy about her clothes and hair, but her teeth are all getting rotten. I recently took her sister(my oldest) to the dentist and he said she'll probly have to get dentures soon because she has so many teeth missing and so many that will have to come out before long and she just turned 15. She recently started brushing more, but the teeth she has left are literally rotting out of her head. I know bad teeth run in my family because I lost all my teeth when I was 15 and I haven't had any teeth or dentures since then, but I think it couldn't hurt if they at least tried to take care of their teeth some. I really can't afford crowns and root canals and some of the expensive stuff they do to save teeth these days. How do I get them to brush more often or better?

Answer:
I tried getting my boys one of those fancy electric toothbrushes. They got to pick it out and even though it was a little pricey, they like using the toothbrushes. Its kinda fun.

tell her none of the boys will like her if she has nasty teeth...and then go give money to boys to go up and tell her they don't like her because she has nasty teeth.

The problem is, if you have bad teeth in the family, there isn't really an insentive for the little girl to do anything. You could show her horror pictures, tell her of deadly bacteria that will kill her unless she takes care of her teeth...or just tell her how painful treatments can be. Most likely, her beeing a teenager, you have already lost the battle and should try and see if you can find any way to raise the extra money. It's really sad though, that she does not take care of her teeth...but hardly your fault, she most likely just assumes she will lose them all and does not want to bother. Or she might not like the taste of the toothpaste... Best of luck, regardless!

Don't hate me for this but you are the parent she is the child. even if she is destined to lose them all gum care is still important. If that means you have to walk them over to the sink after breakfast after school, after dinner and before bed. Remember YOU are the one that is the adult and the one in charge. I know they didn't brush in preschool with out coaching. If you must get childish with them make a chart and evey time They don't brush they get a punishment. Remember it is your job and responcibilty to Make them do the things they must. would you be passive if they were drinkig or on drugs. people don't want to belive it but if not removed promptly your rotten teeth CAN kill you. look it up it was in the new lately.

I think Monica N maight be on to something there. I had really bad teeth all thru school(it runs in my family too) and I always assumed I'd lose all of my teeth before I was 20. No matter what I did they just kept rotting away so I gave up. I already had about half of them pulled by the time I got to high school and what I had left were falling apart, so soon as I got out of school first thing I did was have what was left pulled out. No teeth at all is better than bad teeth.

Your daughter learns by example in how to care for her teeth by the kind of care she has been given for her teeth, and how important she deserves to feel with dental care, even if you are only able to make payments to do this for her. Show and treat her like she is important enough for this, and so much deserves this kind of care and attention for her teeth and well being. One thing you could try to help her want to brush them, is to let her choose the kind and flavor of her toothpaste, even if it is all hers, and let her choose a toothbrush that is pretty to her. Or if she would rather have an electric toothbrush, let her choose this. They are very reasonable now days, and can't be purchased for as little as $6.00. Buy a pretty cup holder kind of thing in a color she likes to set out on the bathroom counter for her toothbrush and toothpaste to stand up in, to help her remember and feel special about her teeth. Another thought I just had, is that if her teeth are this bad already, and she has not had the care and attention of a dentist or hygeinist she likes and is comfortable with for regular checkups and education about her teeth, could it be painful for her to brush? I think if she feels supported and important enough in her dental care, with no mention to her that it is to costly to address these important needs of hers, that she will soon want to take the best care she can of what she has. She will feel pride, and deserving.

Don't be worried. All you have to do is make it fun for them. Maybe make a rewards chart or try to encourage them a little better. Maybe let them choose their tooth paste and tooth brush that they like to motivate them.

dont let her chip them or eat to much candy because that can effect it, and you dont want that to happen, or take her to the dentist for dental care.

Google for some pictures of rotten teeth, turn her around and show her the light, that could happen to her teeth! and maybe start a reward system. using money and taking her to placces, i'm thirteen and love brushing my teeth i think it tickles, i know that sounded so stupid, but i cant stand having nasty teeth, it grosses me out so bad! and well its just wrong, and my guy-freinds hate bad teeth, i know that sounds akward, but they make fin of this one girl about her ugly teeth that are liek eeeew and ritting out and are always so yellow. te,ll your daugher that!
