How to become a dentist?

How does a foreign trained dentist become a dentist in the states?

  • Say if someone wants to be a dentist and there born and raised in canada but they went to another country and got the 5 year dental degree(because of money issues) and now they want to be a dentist in the states, how would they become a licensed dentist? what other education do they need and what exams do they have to take? is it extremely tough? how long would it take? I asked my counselor and a ton of other people(including dentists) but they didn't have a good answer

  • Answer:

Check out this link to NYU School of Dentistry program for foreign students who have a dental degree from another country: http://www.nyu.edu/dental/academicprograms/ddsap/index.html Based on what I read it seems that you would need to go through an additional 3 years of training. NYU dental school can also be quite expensive. Other schools may also have this same option. Good luck.
