What should I do after my wisdom teeth were taken out?

What exactly goes on when wisdom teeth are taken out?

  • Im 20 yrs old, havent had any wisdom teeth taken out. They havent bothered except the past 2 days and I noticed one of my teeth getting crooked from the wisdom tooth growing in more. I have all 4 in, I cant really see much of them (except one is about 80% out of the gums)... the rest are about 30-40% out of the gums. They have been around this way with no pain for a few years now. I work a full time job, so I was wondering exactly what happens during the teeth removal process and how many days should I request off (I deal a lot with talking to customers)? Also, what foods will I need to eat afterwards...only soft food or stuff like soup, ice cream, etc? Do they sew the holes up, or do you just heal?

For my surgeon, he first put me to sleep via IV, then administered Novocaine. He cut through the gums, then cut out the little bits of jawbone that were keeping mine from coming out (yours shouldn't have to do this). Then he pulled the tooth out, cleaned out any remains, and sewed my gums back up. When I awoke, I was wondering when he was going to put me to sleep :D You should request probably 3 days off, since heavy pain meds can wreak havoc on your sleep schedule, and your mouth will hurt terribly for 2 or 3 days afterwards. You won't feel much like talking for about a week, though. As for food, it all depends on the person. It took me about 4 days before I could eat solids again, some people say it took them less than 3 hours. Get a lot of broths, big pasta (no rice, tiny noodles; think more like ramen noodles), cream soups, etc. Also, make sure it doesn't need much preparation, you won't feel like doing it.

I got 5 pulled for the first time last October,. It wasn't the worst thing in the world. Follow your docs instructions so that you don't get dry-rot, I followed instructions and healed fine in a week. I have friends who didn't follow instructions, they got dry-rot and suffered :( take at LEAST 3 days off, if you can, take 5

Hello i have had mine pulled and the procedure is verry simple they will more than likely pull 2 at a time in 2 different apps. .they will not sew the holes up they just heal but do not smoke or drink from a straw any thing in the form of sucking. that will cause (dry socket) and can be verry painfull you should eat soft things for the remainder of the day and possibly into the next day remember the mouth heals quickly so you only need two to three days to heel without dry socket eat jello, pudding, soup, etc and they will give you a list if asked good luck the prosess is quight simple

I had mine taken out and was only really out of it for the first day and that was because the pain meds made me sick. I decided to do without and was just fine. It was only the first day that was seriously painful because I had to bite down on cotton to manage the bleeding. There were stitches in my mouth for about a week or so until they fell out and I had to eat only soft foods for the first week. Everything tasted pretty bland because I couldn't chew it and I couldn't drink with a straw because it could have caused serious complications. I also had to gargle after every meal to make sure that food didn't get into the wounds. As for the removal itself, I was out like a light and don't remember any of it.

Varies from person to person. At best, the procedure is simple; after a shot of novocain, the dentist uses a wedge-like tool to loosen the tooth, and then a pliers to extract it. But in some cases the procedure is more complicated; only dental x-rays can tell for sure. Have an upper and lower pulled on one side (you can chew with the other side for a while), and then come back for the others. Expect to be laid up for a day or so -- more if there are complications. Soft foods are fine; avoid the ice cream for a while -- it's too cold. The sockets just heal over with time.

since they're not impacted its alot easier to extract. the dentist will put u under anesthesia then remove the teeth. he/she packs your mouth with guaze and usually writes you a prescription for a pain killer and antibiotic usually erythromycin. i would definitely take at least 2 days off for the procedure...1 for the appointment due to anesthesia and another to adjust yourself to the meds. they recommend soft food, ice cream, jello to eat just so u wont irritate the extraction area. it's not so bad..good luck!
