What are the positive and negative effects of radiation?

What sort of effects would there be on a 3rd trimester fetus from dental radiation?

  • I am trying to get in to see a dentist today for a massive tooth ache. I'm worried about the effects their radiation might have on my baby (33 weeks) if they have to do x-rays. What sort of effects might dental radiation have on my baby at this gestation of pregnancy?

  • Answer:

The farther along you are, the less the effects of the radiation. Being your child is mostly formed, and is now only growing in the uterus, the effects would be minimal. Also, being the x-ray is only your teeth, virtually no radiation reaches your uterus, and they should shield you, which would prevent any scatter from reaching it. So you are good to go my dear :)

I went to the dentist while I was pregnant, and they put like 3 of those jackets on me for protection. Just make sure they do the same with you..good luck!

We've taken x-rays on pregnant women before. The x-rays are very, very minimal and you wear this big cover that protects all your organs. If it were an issue, they would just have to wait until after the baby was born. You are exposed to more radiation on an international flight.

Not to worry. There will be no effect on Isaiah, as the dentist will use abdominal protection and dental radiography is very focused and short. The distress your body is causing is worse because of your pain. Dental work is safe in the final trimester and I would encourage you to see a dentist ASAP. Best of Luck to you and Isaiah. Love the name BTW.

almost no effect, because your child is fully developed. he can use a protection apron and try to have the cone away from the line of your belly this if xray is needed. anyways the radiation with dental xrays is very low ask him for an intraloral xray rather than an OPG which has a higher radiation dose

None as long as you don't have teeth in your stomach. The beam is very narrow and they should be pointing it at your head. Radiation doesn't get absorbed by the body then travel around.
