What does antibiotics do to a dental abscess?

Abscess has started to drain itself do i still need antibiotics?

  • Hi i posted a couple of days ago about an abscess i have on my gum on my upper teeth, there has been little pain itself from the abscess but very bad headaches and eye socket pain down the right side of my face. but today the abscess has started to drain itself so would i still really need to book an appointment with my dentist for some antibiotics? i do have an appointment at the end of this month to start root canal on the tooth.

  • Answer:

You should. Abscesses like yours rarely drain themselves completely; more commonly they partially heal and then residual bacteria inside cause the abscess to re-form, and your abscess may become far more serious and spread to the upper jaw. Abscesses in bone are really terrible and hard to treat. The infection can also spread to other parts of your body via the blood if left untreated and before antibiotics dental abscesses (like all others) had a significant mortality rate. See your dentist and get antibiotics asap; the root canal cannot go ahead in any case until the infection is resolved.

Keep taking the antibiotics until they are all gone.It isn't healed yet.

When you get that type of dental problem you must seek professional help. Not only do you have to think about the gums but now you need to make sure the bone (jaw bone) is not infected. It sounds like it is. Something else to think about is that an infection travels the blood stream so you are not just concerned about the headache and pain now you need the antibiotic to kill the infection that will travel your whole body. Go to the Emergency room at the hospital they will examine you and prescribe an antibiotic so that you will begin to clear up the infection while waiting to see a dentist.

You should do, to make sure the infection is completely cleared up. Complete the course, too. The dentist may not do the other work unless the infection has been completely cleared. You can help yourself too, by rinsing your mouth with warm salty water. I hope you're feeling better now it's started to drain.

If you started antibiotics, finish the prescription. If you really are certain the abscess is draining and healing, wait another day and see how it progresses. It is possible to heal without antibiotics. Humans had to do it up until about 60-70 years ago.

Yes if you have an abscess then you do need antibiotics. If its too infected then the dentist can't work on it until the infection has gone. The draining down just relieves the pressure for a small while. Don't wait too long as it could turn and get much worse.

yes you should get antibiotics, the pain is a result of the pressure of the infection building up and antibiotics will help reduce the size of the infection.

Yes, you will need it. To get the bacteria out of your system. But, however get to your dentist. To treat the initial cause of infection. GOOD LUCK,

I would still get the antibiotics because sometimes they will not work on your tooth until the infection is all cleared up. Call your dentist and ask what their preference is.

You should so the infection doesn't come back. Cysts do come back with or without them...but you don't want left over infection messing up your teeth.
