Why are my teeth hurting?

Why get my wisdom teeth out if they aren't hurting?

  • My teeth aren't hurting and they, ironically, only hurt after I leave the dentist for a cleaning. My wisdom teeth do not hurt in my mouth. My bottom two are coming in straight and even erupted. Top two are slanted. My dentist recommended that I get them out a year ago, but too busy to go into the specialist he recommended with school, work, and studying abroad. I went to my dentist for a cleaning and kind of strongly suggested that I go to the specialist and would even schedule me in today and since I didn't have any class to go to as first day of spring break, I gave in. I went for the consultation. They said they'd take all four out and started me signing on these forms. The sheer price tag is what got me. 2700 and after insurance I'd still owe about 1800 for it. It just seems like a ridiculous price for something that's NOT bugging or hurting me. Why get them pulled if they aren't bothering me? Why get all four pulled if two are straight? Is it bad to wait awhile or a couple years? 1800 is a lot for me as I'm still in college and just too much total for family to squeeze out as well.

  • Answer:

You don't have to get them all pulled at once, but it's recommended you get them pulled in your late teens or early 20s as a preventive measure. Even if they're not causing you issues now, it's always possible they could become infected later. Of course, if you do have the procedure you'll have to be very careful to follow the post-op instructions to avoid infection then as well.

once they impact other teeth, it gets painful and very expensive to remove them surgically. they also can damage other teeth, and you have to fix those,as well. i had all four impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed under drip sedation, and novocaine. recovery time was five days until i could return to work, and get away from tylenol with codeine. had i had them removed years earlier, it would have been simpler and less painful.

You will most likely want to get the problematic teeth pulled out even if they are not such a problem now, they will become later and it will be worse. As for the good ones, well it's all ways better to have more teeth. I know a person who's doctor wanted to get the good wisdom teeth out just for precaution (but the person rejected) and now they (those teeth) are one of the last good teeth remaining in that person's mouth. It's not all ways like this, but personally I'd rather just remove what really needs to be removed.

You may not want them to use the drug Versed ( Midazolam ) for the procedure. In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time. Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscious sedation, twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!Forgetting does no mean it did not happen!! Amnesia does NOT take place for some patients. IT'S NOT MY INTENTION FOR YOU TO NOT GET THE PROCEDURE DONE, JUST INFORMING YOU THAT YOU MAY WANT IT DONE WITH ANOTHER DRUG!!!!! Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.
