How do root canals look?

What risks to look for when getting major dental work finished in 5 marathon sessions?

  • Or Plan B- See a dentist weekly for 1 1/2 yrs. I need: 17 teeth pulled, 6 root-canals, 6 new crowns, 1 filling. kill any infection. I would rather get the pain over quickly then stretch out such a unpleasant time consuming task. I would like feedback of risks/concerns I should consider before making up my mind and then feedback of what I should look for if I do go forward with this mega week. Before answering the drawbacks take note that my life is on hold because of my present condition. I can't look at myself and avoid everyone. The pain is just as much a factor that I can hardly endure. Although there will be pros and cons either way...Just the thought of the end of that mega week when I can be wearing some type of partial which lets the healing begin. All that abcess and decay removed quickly restores my mouths health, restores my smile that disappeared for five years. I just need to know is there any drawbacks I am unaware of? If you were me...what would you do?

It really depends on your motivation and hygiene. I would tend to take longer, be more conservative, if I thought you didn't quite grasp the oral hygiene requirements, required by complicated dentures, both fixed and removable. In cases where I have doubt I build more frequent hygiene appointments into the price of the treatment. If your hygiene was good. I would certainly recommend the faster plan, as life tends to get in the way of lengthy treatment plans. However, one consideration would be the amount of time between the root canal and the crowns going over the treated teeth. I would generally recommend minimum 1 month go by before crowning the endodontically treated or("Root canalled")teeth. This would be to see if an infection develops. this year particularly I have had to pull or destroy several freshly placed crowns on patients who came to me from other offices, because the crowns were placed to quickly after a Root Canal. You also need some time between extractions and impressions for the final denture or prosthesis that your dentist plans to make. A temporary prosthesis can be made to wear while you are in treatment.

Wow, you really are going to have a busy week. You know, there are only a few things I would check with the dentist about. 1. Allowing yourself time to heal between extractions and other dental work. You may be sore..ck with the dentist. 2. Does the office you are going to have an in-house lab? Some offices do and some don't. If they don't, it is likely you will have to return a few weeks after your crowns are prepped and impressions for partials are made. If so, why not spread some of the other work out a few weeks? 3. Money. Does this dentist accept payments? You are facing a LOT of money unless you have state assistance. Thousands of dollars are going into your mouth. If you have dental insurance thru work, most plans pay only $1000.00 per calendar/fiscal year maximum. Those are the only things I can think of at the moment. Congratulations on your brand new smile. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
