How long should pain last after a tooth extraction?

How long does the pain of wisdom tooth extraction last?

  • I had my lower right wisdom tooth extracted a couple of weeks ago, it seems to be healing well the dissolveable stitches have gone and no hole it seems! The rest of that side of my mouth is really painful still, so I was wondering how long other people were in pain after wisdom tooth extraction? I presume it's due to bruising.

  • Answer:

Everyone has different results because everyone's wisdom teeth are different. I had two done, separately, the first took a couple of days to settle down and the other a couple of weeks because it had been deep into my jaw. It may indeed just be bruising, but to set your mind at rest go back to the dentist.

Wisdom teeth sometimes have deep, wide roots and because they are at the back of the mouth can be difficult to remove. Was the extraction done in the chair or at a hospital under general anaesthetic? Did the tooth come out whole or did they have to use excavators? Were there any complications? Pain thresholds are different for each person but I suggest you get the socket checked by your dentist as the pain should have significantly diminished by now.

The pain should ease after a couple of days but if not go to the dentsit again or the dr you may have an infection and need antibiotics, thats what happened to my husband,

Pebble da rebble

usually it lasts a week, but in some cases, depending on the bruise on the jaw resulting from the extraction, it could last up to 3 weeks

The pain from an extraction of wisdom teeth shouldn't extend beyond 2 days... a bit of discomfort is probable, but not pain! you should have it re-examined by doctor or dentist... your extraction procedure may have given rise to an abcess, which would cause pain... can be treated rapidly with antibiotics.
