How long does it take for wisdom teeth to fully grow in?

  • My dentist told me that my wisdom teeth were going to come in nicely and I was going to have enough room for them on my last checkup (it's time for me to go again soon). Unfortunately, he warned me that it's like a baby cutting teeth, they'll be in a lot of pain and get fevers even though they have enough room for the teeth. So...I've had pain in the very back of all 4 corners of my mouth for the last 2 weeks. My jaw is stiff and I've been getting fevers. I can even see a little bit of white on my bottom right. There's no doubt in my mind that it's my wisdom teeth. How much longer will it take for them to grow in, just on average? Any advice you can give me to ease the pain?

  • Answer:

Count on probably another few weeks if you can already see them breaking thru. Try some OraGel. It will help.

well mine are just starting to come in and they do take quite a long time. But as far as your dentist there, they are supposed to be pulled you know? not that i want mine to be pulled (ahh). But i have a feeling hes not a very good dentist as wisdom teeth rot and crowd your other teeth. Now yours may not crowd, but if you do decide to leave them be, be sure you brush to the Very back of your mouth. Just to avoid any cavaties

i'm 16, and my wisdom teeth have been growing in for a long while. i have 3 out of 4 tines of one of them, and one outside tine of each of the bottom ones that have already grown in clear of the gum. in the lead up to them coming in it took months, but no pain. once they actually started coming through i had 1 or 2 tines of the tooth, then the third came out (practically over night) and i had a flap of gum on the tooth between the tines for 2-3 days, but it receeded quickly. when the tines of the bottom ones came through, it happened really fast. however i have no idea how long it will take for them to all come in fully. i suspect the the growth pattern of mine is probably due to my age. as for pain, there was very little. the gum flap was annoying and a bit painful. the others were just sore. if it gets bad than any painkiller should work. if you have a fever too, than take an oral pain killer that has anti-fever stuff in it, like neurofen or advil; i think those also have anti-inflamitories in them which could be helpful. i never got a fever though. something i didn't forsee was the difference it made to the inside of my cheeks. there is enough space in my mouth for the teeth, but for the first few weeks i was pretty much constantly biting my cheek by accident, the tooth was also rubbing on the inside of my cheek. that goes away after a couple of weeks, but it is really annoying. wisdom teeth are just teeth, they will not rot out if they are not pulled. though it does make sense to make sure that you get them when you brush your teeth. i do now have a new sympathy for teething babies.

It seemed like it took several weeks when mine came in. It really makes you sympathize with babies who are getting a whole mouthful of teeth at the same time! It hurts! You might try using Orajel like babies do. Also, tylenol can help. You are lucky that yours are coming in well, and though eventually you will probably have them pulled, it is a lot easier if they come in straight so that pulling them isn't such a big deal. Good luck!
