    Traveling from FL to NC, we used to stop at a tourist trap called South of the Border that had every kind of firework you could imagine. We would stock up since fireworks were illegal in FL. The one you are talking about I remember being called "snakes". My mom would get so mad at us cause these caused a big black mark on the concrete.

It's not a firecracker, it's a novelty firework. They're called black snakes. They're fairly common at fireworks stands/shops, basically anywhere novelty fireworks are sold. You can even get them online: http://www.skylighter.com/mall/novelty.asp#NV0300 That was a funny South Park episode.
