Build a Better Packaging Box?
-
Ever see a product packaged in an odd or unattractive way? Ever get frustrated fighting with a box just to get to the product inside? I am currently looking for suggestions of poor package designs, so I can design a better one! The solution to these boxes will be created out of cardboard/as a box. So things that you would not find in a box will not work (i.e. liquids, some foods or some glass). Here are some examples I've thought of. Please let me know if you would you buy these products or if they might already be on the market. --------------------------------------… Problem: Sunglasses/glasses cases. This problem especially applies to women. The case goes in your purse, but occupies a lot of space, especially if your sunglasses are large. When wearing sunglasses, the case lies useless in your purse. Solution: Build a box that can easily be adjusted to fit all sunglass/glass sizes. When wearing the glasses/sunglasses, the box will fold flat thus saving a lot of space in your purse. Problem: Gift Bags. When buying a gift, usually people buy two things to package it: a gift box and tissue paper. The tissue paper sometimes wrinkles and is inconvenient to buy. Solution: Creating a bag with a zipper at the top and an opening at the bottom. The paper bag will be purchased flat and the gift will be placed inside the bag from the bottom. There will be a system to close it at the bottom which once done, the bag will become 3D. The person receiving it will have to tear off the front/open the zipper to get to the gift. Done, no more tissue paper. Problem: gum packaging. After chewing it, to manny people throw or stick it everywhere. Solution: Create a small extra trash compartment that will complement the pre existing box. It will be secure enough with an opening and closing system so that when used gum is placed it, it will stay inside until the whole packet is thrown out with it. Problem: Shoe boxes. When shopping for shoes, picking up the box, walking over to a seat, opening it, putting on the shoes, taking them off, placing the box back to where it was and if unsatisfied, doing the process all over again becomes very tiring and annoying. Solution: Create a box with a front side opening (no more side or top openings). A side flap, facing the customer will be lifted and the shoes will be taken out without physically grabbing the box from the shelves. The box will remain empty on the shelf while to customer tries the shoes on and will be strong enough to hold all boxes above it, if it is placed at the bottom for example. I look forward to hearing your suggestions and ideas!

Answer:
You make some interesting points in your designs. A couple things came to mind when reading each one: Sunglasses/glasses case - the biggest problem I see with this design is durability. Cardboard cannot get wet, and it is not very durable. After a couple of times of folding it, it would start to fall apart, not really practical in the long run. Gift bags - I see a problem with using a zipper in a disposable paper bag. Seems like such a waste. If made out of paper, the bags won't be reused, as many people reuse gift bags currently. Gum packaging - I love this idea! I am not sure if it would be very sanitary however to carry germs and chewed up gum around with you all the time. Shoe boxes - this is definitely my favorite one of your ideas. I HATE trying on shoes because of carrying all the clunky boxes around. Overall, I like your ideas, but I think your materials are a little off, something that will be reuseable like a glasses case, would need to be made of something durable, what about silicon like collapsible baking pans? Just an idea
